A buffalo herd enjoying a good mud bath in Zakouma. Even though the temperatures are lower during the wet season, the insects are on their best and tend to make all four legged mammals itchy this time of the year. A good layer of mud works as a perfect protective screen for the bugs!

Four months after the historical reintroduction of black rhino in Chad, all six rhinos have adapted extremely well to their new environment and are sighted daily by the rhino monitoring teams. Here is Hilmal Watane, a male of about 6 years, hidden between the dense vegetation of Zakouma's wet season.

They are rather intimidating, these buffalo bulls in Zakouma. Fantastic close-up of a muddy buffalo by photographer Michael Viljoen.

An elephant feeding in the acacia during an early morning in the dry season. This is the most magical time of the day during the hot, dry season, when the air is still crisp and clear, and the first rays of sunlight peek out from behind the trees.

The most critical part of protecting an area such as Zakouma; engagement with the community.
We are very fortunate to work with the most amazing people around the park, who have experienced the benefits of the intensive protection of the elephants and how it has helped to bring stability and employment to the region.

For those of you that have seen Zakouma in the dry season, it will be difficult to believe that this is Rigueik when it is flooded! While under water at the moment, this area is one of the peak game viewing areas in Zakouma during the dry seasons, where thousands of birds and mammals congregate around the remaining water pools.

Today is World Ranger Day. We thank the men and women that are our boots on the ground, in dust and mud, for their dedication to protect the wildlife in the national park.
On this photo one of the Mamba teams in Zakouma, a team of rangers that have received specialised training and are able to respond within minutes to any incident. Every day we see the results of their efforts, which inspires us even more to protect the wildlife and nature in Chad.
