A week ago I was a mentor for 2 young girls at the @inspiredbyher_conference with @healthyheartsbc. A conference for girls ages 8-12 years old and designed to encourage them to set goals, be aware of how social media can manipulate how we perceive ourselves, overcoming judgment, finding joy in movement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was incredible. I look forward to inspiring young minds and it blows me away what our future may look like. One of my mini’s wants to be a neurosurgeon, their positive self talk was on point and I helped to encourage them to dream big with their goals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If we limit what we think our success looks like, we limit those results. The same thing applies to goals. Challenge yourself to strive for something you might not think is possible because you will challenge yourself to become the person who makes it become a reality...who makes it possible!
wa•ter (noun): indicates depth, motion and life. We all know what water is...but do you know what it means? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every living organism needs water to survive and we are composed of ~60% water. It embodies life. It circulates, whether in our bodies, as waves, in lakes or oceans. It always is moving. It is wise and takes the path of least resistance. It is powerful and has the ability to take different forms. It shows our reflection. It travels and moves to many depths. It is global covering ~70% of the planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This year I travelled to the beaches of Hawaii & LA. Too many lakes, waterfalls and rivers to count. I’m a water baby, I’m a water sign and I don’t think it’s a coincidence 2018 ended chasing a waterfall. This year my life moved, just like water, more than it has in a long time in every area of my life. I feel like 2018 were my streams. 2019 will be my waves!
Make a wish. Hold it close to your heart. Believe it, dream it, breathe it....THEN LIVE IT! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Take advantage of this winter wonderland we call home right in our backyard. Just listen when you’re in it. Let the snow fall on your face. Let it brighten your eyes for 2019!
They say the hips don’t lie...they don’t!. Did some tandem FST this wk on the hip flexors with @axelionmane ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The hip flexor muscles create flexion of the hip joint and can feel tight for a number or reasons. Think of when you stand up from sitting too long OR a sprinter strides and the leg is fully extended and you feel tightness in front of the hip. Improving hip extension could help you to feel less stiff doing daily movements to performing optimally. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The hip flexors are also part of different fascial lines throughout the body. For example, the spiral line spirals from you feet to the base of your skull. If there are tissues along that line that are tight it could impact the line in another areas. The hip flexors are just one part of that line!
March 2004 I fractured my knee cap into two pieces snowboarding on a rail. March 2005 I became a snowboard instructor. March 2006 I did my first run in powder on Whistler Mountain. March 2007 I was riding with incredible instructors on the North Shore mountains. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I could have never touched a snowboard again because it’s “safer” that way. Or I could have never done another rail or trick because I already knew the consequence. I got stronger. I learnt and was coached by some of the best instructors on the North Shore mountains. I continue to ride with people who challenge me to be better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One bad thing or event in your life does not define the experience you will have if encountered again. I can’t change my past and I have scars to remind me of it but they remind me of the hard work I put in to getting to where I am now, how much I’ve grown and ALL the adventures I’ve had since. I will continue to climb ALL the mountains I can for the rest of my life in any way I can. They make me happy...do what makes you happy!
I recently had the opportunity to work with a group of competitive fast pitch athletes who have the ability and potential to move on to university scholarships. One of their sessions we spent on joint health and how to keep them strong focusing on the more common areas of injury (knees, shoulders and ankles). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO FOCUS ON THE FOUNDATION OF MOVEMENT? A coach is going to coach you how to play your game and get better at it. A nutritionist will tell you how to eat for performance. A strength and conditioning coach or trainer SHOULD be coaching you to become strong using sport specific exercises/drills AND how to effectively prepare/ support your body to do exactly that. These girls weren’t educated on how to do exactly that, especially around the more common areas of injury. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So this is what motivates me more to do what I do. Sharing with others on how to keep your body healthy so you prevent anything from happening. And ESPECIALLY working with young teenage girls, being an athlete or not, on how to confidently move through changes to chase their dreams and passions.
Today, December 3, is the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities. To promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for their rights and well-being. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shelby is 21 years old and has Cerebral Palsy. We’ve known each other for over 2 years and recently I have had the pleasure of working with her addressing her scoliosis. We use activation techniques and Fascial Stretch Therapy to help create more movement, especially in her hips. It’s a process we’re both committed to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her dedication to her physical health, her desire to go on to help others with disabilities to have the resources to live a more effortless life...this girl embodies perseverance and determination! So proud of you Shelby and how much you have grown inside and out!
“It happens to everyone Robin! I did it, I even have a scar on my chin from when I hit it there too!”...says my coach lol ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SMOKED myself in the nose tonight doing a Clean & Jerk. Surprised myself, head rush, eyes wouldn’t stop watering, little blood, a bit shaken. I then added more weight to the bar. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We all have set backs in life. Some leave a long lasting scars to remind us and others are a memory but you’ll never move forward if you don’t try again. Shift how you perceived those though experiences to one’s you learn and gain from. Learn and succeed!
