View of San Francisco Bay salt.
Since 1854, salt is one of San Francisco’s largest industries, with over 80% of its wetlands developed for salt mining. The salt ponds cover over 16,500 acres, most of which was owned by Cargill, Inc., an international food production and marketing company. In 2003, Cargill, Inc. sold 15,100 acres of the ponds to state and federal agencies, as well as private foundations, who are now in the process of restoring the land to its pristine tidal wetland beginnings.

“Fragmented” was the word that came to mind for Veronika (@kutovakika) when describing her day-to-day life. “Thus, a picture of a puzzle,” she writes in her caption. “Every day might not be a dance on roses, but sometimes the puzzle comes together just right.” 🌹 #WHPmyeveryday

“I waited for a whole year for this one weekend in September to have fall foliage, and the Milky Way rising over the Maroon Bells and reflecting in the lake in one frame,” writes Your Shot photographer Manish Mamtani. “After reaching here, I had to wait for another couple of hours in the freezing weather for the moon to set and the Milky Way to align with the Maroon Bells. The green color in the sky is due to air glow. It was so quiet and calm that you could see the reflection of the Milky War in the lake clearly even with the naked eye.”

“Wow. I hope you have framed this photo nice and big for your wall Manis. And then I hope every time you look at it, you pause and have a quiet moment remembering the journey you took to be at this exact spot to capture this image.” — @natgeoyourshot Producer David Y. Lee (@davidylee)

The Andes are pretty incredible. Taking off today and going all the way north to the other end of the country in Salta. Temperatures will be much warmer. I got a nasty cold here so I’m looking forward to warm weather and sun.

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.
