Ahamkara - Siberian Shaman

To summon rain, the shamans used the following ritual. A ritual cup filled with spring water was set up for the night under the open sky. The next morning the shaman should take the cup with both hands, raise it above his head and read a spell:"I call the heavenly moisture to make it close to the earth moisture. Let the rain fall on the earth and give life to all green crops!"

The personification of the Mistress of the Rain is a common snail. To cause rain, shaman needs to find the snail in the forest and treat it with special reverence - take it home, dig a hole in the shade. In the hole he must put a plate with fresh leaves and water, after it he should put snail in that cup.. At noon, you should go to the snail with the ritual cup, sprinkle water on it and ask the rain to be sent to the ground

Shamans are persistent - if there was no result, everything was repeated the next day. If it was raining, then the snail should be carried into the place where shaman found it with honors

The role of the shaman varied from culture to culture and with different circumstances. In some cultures shamanic ideology, technique and ritual dominated social interaction while in others it constituted a secondary influence. The word shaman itself has a Sanskrit origin, and means ascetic

The shaman's power essentially lies in mastering the ecstatic techniques of dreams, visions, and trances. Ecstasy in its original sense meant an altered state of consciousness with an awareness of the single emotion rapture. The shaman also mastered the traditional mythology, genealogy, belief system and secret language of the tribe as well as its healing methods. The youth who are called to be a shaman attracts attention through their love for solitude, desire to roam in the woods or in unfrequented places, visions, and spontaneous song-making. Sometimes they enter trance-like states which make them unconscious. These signs are regarded with pleasure and awe by the tribespeople who generally believe that their soul is being carried away by spirits to a place where they are instructed, sometimes by his shaman ancestors, in the secrets of the profession

In some cultures the behavior of the prospective shaman is described in terms that seem to indicate psychopathology. However it is precisely because they succeed in curing themselves that these individuals become shamans. Often a crisis bordering on madness is provoked in the future shamans by the sudden announcement to others in the tribe that they have been chosen by the spirits for this profession. In other cases this initiatory sickness is induced by the use of drugs or fasting and other austerities. Regardless of the means, the symbolic pattern of death and rebirth common to all initiation rites will be reenacted

The initiatory rituals peculiar to Siberian and central Asian shamanism include a ritual series of waking dreams. During this ritual Siberian shamans maintain that they "die" and lie inanimate for from three to seven days in a tent or other solitary place

The traces of shamanism are present in traditional religions of each continent in a bigger or smaller scale. In tribal societies of Siberia and Central Asia shamanism always has been a fundamental factor in religious life from the Bronze Age. Even though from 1920 onward, Buryat shamanism was fought by Soviet authorities, many traditions were secretly preserved and nowadays tribes from Lake Baikal, Trans-Baikal, Tuva and Altai regions still perform traditional rites

According to shamanism, the universe is divided into three worlds: the upper world, earth and the underworld. These worlds are connected by a cosmic axis called by the Buryats (in Baikal region) the “Golden Pillar” and recognised as the centre of the universe and the place of penetration of the individual worlds. The upper world is inhabited by gods, underworld – by demons, and the centre – earth – by humans. There are also Abaasies – spirits that can live in all three worlds. Shamans can interact and communicate with spirits from each world

Ancestors worship is an extremely important element of Shamanism in Siberia. According to beliefs, they live in the upper world and shamans can connect with them, when they receive pieces of advice or problem solutions. As mentioned above, according to Siberian tribes beliefs, the shaman is the person who can communicate with spirits and penetrate all of the three worlds. He is a soothsayer, priest and a healer at the same time. Beside that he has the deepest knowledge of spirits and rituals and because of all that he’s a very respected person. People of the community turn every question and request to him because he has the power to help in case of illness, crop failure, the disease of animals. That power lies in mastering the ecstatic techniques of dreams, visions, and trances. A very common thing in Siberian Shamanism is to isolate the shaman who does not participate in the everyday life of tribal society

One of the best ways to connect with power animals is through the art of shapeshifting. In the shaman's world, animals are kin, an ancient belief reflected in mythology and in animism - the belief that non-human entities are spiritual beings. It is a mental world where the seen and the unseen; the material and the spiritual merge. As their helping spirits, the shamans "might use animals, anything that grows," says Osuitok Ipeelee, an esteemed Artic Inuit sculptor. "It was well known that the animals the shamans controlled had the ability to turn into humans. When a shaman was using his magic he had a real change of personality. When the animals entered into him he'd be chanting loudly; if a shaman was turning into a certain animal, he'd make that animal sound. Once he was filled inside, he'd begin to change; his face and his skin followed"

Shapeshifting is more than just transforming into an animal as is often depicted in shamanic accounts and tales. It is the ability to shift your energies to adapt to the demands and changes of daily life. We all learn which activities, behaviors, and attitudes support or hinder our survival and growth. It is a natural and instinctual ability that we all share. The minimal development of this talent is the ability to mimic. We often mimic for the purpose of learning something or to blend in with our social or physical environment. It implies changing one's pattern of appearance or behavior, rather than just using what you already have. Actors, for example, are known for their ability to take on the characteristics of another person or thing

A shapeshifter is one who manipulates their aura to access a higher or inner power in order to grow and learn. The human aura is the energy field that surrounds the human body in all directions. All shapeshifting occurs on an energy level. If everything is broadcasting its own energy pattern and if you could match and rebroadcast the same pattern, then you would take on the appearance and qualities of the thing you were matching. The only constraining factor is the degree of belief, connection, and energy. To experience this for yourself, try the following simple exercise:

According to Yakutia shamanism that person who has mastered the spirit of the shaman, must lie
seven or nine days on a clean bed and in clean clothes, consuming only water and get a place that neither people nor animals wander around. With him there should be only one person

They say his body is divided between nine kinds of all demons, evil spirits, causative diseases (“togus yuyor harduger”). It is also said that his bones are being counted by demons to find out if he is a fully healthy. If he dont have enough bones one of his closest relatives must die in order for him to become a shaman

According to the stories, the ancient shamans in the period of ettenia - dissecting them the bodies (demons) live locked up in their home, in a deserted area

The dissection of the body of the shaman consists, as it were, in the following. Hooking iron hook, tearing, separating all joints, bones clean, scraping meat and removing body juices. Both eyes are taken out of the hollows and put separately. At the end of this whole operation, the bones are again connected and sew with iron threads, and the eyeball ( to - “water eyes”) put back into place. Only after all this they (demons) turn him into a shaman

The world of the forest and waters is the home of wild animals upon whom man relies to survive

Animals are called amitan, “having an ami soul”, because like human beings they possess an ami body soul which provides the breath and warmth of the living body

Ami souls of animals usually reincarnate as newborn members of their species, so deer return as more deer, seals return as seals, or bears reincarnate as bears

Since they have souls animals are considered to have personalities, language, and even psychic abilities just like humans

The master spirit of all the hunting animals is known as Bayan Ahaa (rich older brother). Hunters appeal to him for fortune in finding game. The highest ranking animals of the wild are the Siberian tiger, the snow leopard, and the bear. Buryat call the tiger Anda Bars (best friend tiger) and pray to him for good hunting. In much of Siberia the bear is seen as a master of the animals and revered as an ancestor. Many Siberian tribes have special ceremonies for honoring the bear after he is killed

Because animals possess reincarnating souls, there are many rules regarding the killing of game so that their souls will not be offended. Otherwise, they may become angry and refuse to return to the tribal hunting grounds or tell other animal spirits to stay away. When a large animal is killed or a large fish is caught, the hunter or fisherman may cry over its death to appease the animal spirit. Hunters also apologize to animals when they are killed, saying that they needed to take the meat and hide for their
survival. Domestic animals are also killed in a respectful manner. Heads are not chopped off because cutting the throat injures the ami soul. The head, throat, lungs, and heart, which is collectively called the zuld, is the residence of an animal’s ami and should be removed from the body as one piece

When an animal is killed for a sacrifice the hide and the zuld are hung up on poles pointing to heaven. After bears are eaten the skull or sometimes the whole skeleton is placed on a pole or platform in the forest

The animal symbolism of the otter relies a lot on its environment. As an aquatic animal, the otter is a symbol of life. Why? Because the prime symbolic meaning of water deals with the divine feminine, which is a major life-giving energy. Water (and otters) are symbolic of creativity, fluidity and transitions

The otter’s affinity to water is also symbolic of healing. Consider: Water is a purifying, cleansing element. It makes sense water-loving creatures such as the otter will share those purifying qualities too

Otter meaning is also closely connected to lunar symbolism. Water, the moon and otters have a long, symbolic history together. Indeed, the Algonquin named one of their full moons the “otter moon”. Otters are most active in the spring and summer. Typically the otter moon would be the first full moon after the spring equinox

Animal Symbolism: Meaningful Otter

Highlights:
Joy
Agility
Energy
Curiosity
Creativity
Dexterity
Protection
Friendship
Playfulness

Feeling blue? Humbly ask the otter to enter your consciousness for a jolt of joy. Compose a few quiet moments of meditation focusing on otter energy. You’ll be amazed at how refreshed and light you feel afterwards

Been accused of being a stuffed shirt, or a stick-in-the-mud? Let the otter pry you out of your stiff rut. Consider drawing or painting an otter. Even try an otter dance (romp and frolic the way the otter does!)

Feeling a little insecure? Visualize a giant otter standing upright by your side. Really get the feel of this amazingly fearless creature “having your back” and standing in your corner. Conjure your otter ally when you’re feeling lack of confidence or nervous. Before going into a job interview, or visiting your mother-in-law for example. I call upon the otter when I go to the dentist! My otter is gigantic! Taller than me! He’s got this “I dare you to mess with my girl!” look on his face…all the while snickering in a very snarky way at my dentist. It’s both bolstering and hysterical!
