Pretty excited to hear that Free Solo has won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. But I’m even more excited that now that the film is being released I can finally see all the pictures that @jimmy_chin has shot with me over the last few years of film making. I never got to see any of the material while we were shooting - seeing it now is a nice way to revisit two years of great climbing. This is a shot of Freestone, a route that, as the old guide book said, is probably harder than Astroman (despite being shorter). And being up there with Yosemite Falls raging behind definitely adds to the ambiance. Gotta love Yosemite! @natgeo@mochinyc And for anyone curious: Free Solo opens in theaters September 28th. Get psyched!
Toronto International Film Festival highlights: looking all classy with @sannimccandless, seeing my Canadian godfather Peter again after too many years, and sampling the various climbing gyms around Toronto. And of course, seeing #freesolo on a huge screen. El Cap felt life size! The whole film premier whirlwind continues!
Super stoked to see The Dawn Wall in theaters soon! @tommycaldwell has always been a huge inspiration and seeing him and @kjorgeson climb possibly the hardest bigwall in the world together is pretty darn exciting. It’s opening in New York and LA on the 14th and then appearing as a one night event in theaters all over the country on the 19th. I’ve heard that tickets are selling out so get yours soon. It’s a great film, stoked for everyone involved. @senderfilms@brettlowell@joshlowell And yes, I know it’s confusing timing that there are two different feature films coming out about climbing on El Cap at almost the same time. When it rains it pours. So much psyche!
I’ve had an amazing time at the Telluride Film Festival. The Free Solo premier was surprisingly powerful and seeing how the film affected audiences was inspiring. And the outdoor recreation opportunities around Telluride kept it all pretty fun! The whole crew got to go adventuring on the via ferrata - one of the highlights for sure. The journey continues at the Toronto International Film Festival this week - probably more gym time and fewer mountains...
So stoked to be in Telluride, CO for the Telluride Film Festival. Excited that Free Solo is premiering today, but more excited that there’s so much good climbing in town! So nice to be in the mountains.
I’m going to be speaking/participating at the inaugural @outwild.co festival in Malibu, CA this November 2-4. The festival is focused around spending more time outside and leading a more values-driven life. Come join the party - link in profile. And early bird tickets are $100 off for another 2 days. Get psyched. @honngy photo.
Tom Frost - what an inspiration. Visionary climber and photographer (and gear tinkerer), but more importantly a genuine, kind, and positive man. He came up to the Valley for moral support when @hansflorine and I set the speed record on the Nose in 2012. He joked that while us shaving 9 minutes or so off the record was impressive, it paled in comparison to the 40 odd days that he shaved off the record on the second ascent. One of the highlights of last fall was doing an interview with Tom in El Cap Meadow for an upcoming documentary about his life from Flatlander Films. To hear his account of the first ascent of the Salathe while looking up at the wall was truly inspiring. Thanks, Tom.
Free Solo got accepted into the Toronto International Film Festival! Pretty excited to go to #TIFF18 in a few weeks. And more excited to see the film in theaters at the end of September. Link to the film trailer in my bio - for those that haven’t seen it. And pretty stoked about the movie poster - nice pic @jimmy_chin. @natgeo@thompowers1
Tomorrow is my birthday! I’ve never really liked gifts, and I don’t need much, but last year my girlfriend’s family started what will hopefully be a tradition of donating to the @honnoldfoundation for my birthday. And that’s something I can appreciate. So for anyone who wants to get me a birthday present or wish me well, please consider setting up a recurring donation at the link in bio. Any amount is appreciated - and every amount has an impact. Depending on where you live, $6 can buy you a cup of coffee or a couple tacos. But for a family living in rural Malawi, $6 can buy a solar lantern - a lantern that can provide free, sustainable light, and replace the old kerosene lamp that filled their house with a toxic black cloud. Use the link in my bio to set up any kind of donation. Thanks. @tedhesser photo from an expedition to Kenya.
Happy birthday to the one and only @tommycaldwell !! I happen to be giving a slideshow in his hometown of Estes Park today and I’ve decided to make it entirely about adventures we’ve had together. Dug up this photo from our first real day of climbing together - free climbing the Triple in Yosemite in 2012. It was a pretty awesome start to a great partnership. @benjaminbditto photo.
I’m so stoked to announce the release of FREE SOLO, the film documenting my free solo of El Cap last year. It’s co-directed by my friends Chai Vasarheyli (@mochinyc) and @jimmy_chin and will be in theaters this fall. Get psyched! #FreeSolo
