Real life: I’ve slept two hours last night, I haven’t slept longer than 4 hours in the past week or maybe two. I’m sitting and drinking a blueberry smoothie while breastfeeding, and writing this. My son is lightly kicking me with his feet and vigorously eating.
As he slowly dozes off, I’m contemplating whether to nap, practice or go out on an hour and a half walk to the bookstore to get him some books that play music because those are his favorites.
I’m exhausted, grateful and excited... been on this sleepless high that’s very much fueled by love and a deep sense of purpose. I have nothing profound to share other than how I feel in this very present moment, because isn’t that all that matters really?
💛
What are you doing right now? Where are you reading this? How are you feeling? 😊

I used to sometimes go to an 8 AM yoga class before work when I was still working in fashion.
I remember the feeling of lying in savasana in complete surrender after countless vinyasas and a jumble of intriguingly confusing postures. I would start to hear this soft WHOOSHHH sound and I would wonder: is this a sound instructors play in savasana? Is it a sound from outside? Or is it a sound that always exists but we never notice?
I started loving that sound. It made me feel oddly relaxed... content, at peace. Nothing else mattered. It didn’t matter if I was seeing a difficult client at work later on that day, or that I had no idea what I was doing in Abu Dhabi or if I even wanted to stay there. Everything would slowly and softly dissipate, and I would be left with that feeling of completeness and calm serenity. Yoga didn’t magically make my mind-made troubles disappear, but it helped give me a separation. A break. A calm pause where I could see that I was not my little worries and thoughts, or my big ones.
I started noticing that that WHOOSHH soft sound maybe always existed in the studio since it faced the street, it could be the sound of water in the street. Whatever it was, I couldn’t hear it until savasana because I wasn’t paying attention.
Sometimes we can be so stuck in the narrative inside our own heads that we “check out” from noticing things around us.
Yesterday as I was preparing to leave the house to teach my first class, my intention was to give people that feeling to the best of my ability. So that they could carry it on with them throughout their day. Because to me, that is yoga. A pleasant pause of quiet - amidst continuous mindmade noise.
Being nervous had no place anymore. It wasn’t about me, it’s about them. This is my job now, and I will never take it for granted. I will wake up and do it from all of my heart.

Working on my standing compass with these new wall stretches.
That standing pigeon is intense! Feels so good though, especially after pregnancy as well as living on a fourth floor walk-up. I was focusing on trying to bring my shin parallel to the wall and standing leg strong.
I love trying different variations to poses where their relationship to gravity is different.
If you try this, my tip is to focus on always keeping your collarbones wide and spine long.

“Listen to your body.” This is something we probably hear in every yoga class, and it might sound vague or even cliché. But the meaning of it unfolds the more we spend time practicing and tuning in. Our bodies are constantly giving us feedback, whether on the mat or off of it. At first, the feedback is overwhelming. So many sensations occur on the mat and it’s a new language to try to figure out. Pain and discomfort are often intertwined as one. The more you spend time practicing, you begin to notice and invite that discomfort, as it leads to growth - and you learn to respect, avoid and obey the voice of pain.
During my recovery period, I noticed it’s less important the postures I do on the mat than that I spend time listening to feedback, observing how certain things feel, where there’s a weakness, where feels really good... and then from there use intelligent discernment to see what I need less/more of on that particular day.
❤️
I’ll be chatting to @healingcairo on their story about yoga, teacher trainings, postpartum practice and more topics soon. We will announce the exact date for the takeover. If you have a specific yoga question you’d like me to address, please feel free to DM me or @healingcairo your questions and I will video the response on their story.

I saw @yogoskenz do this and was inspired to do it too: to write two things you love about yourself physically and two things you love about yourself spiritually (something about your character that you admire).
Comment your four things below! Can’t wait to read them!
Here are mine:
1. I’ve grown to love my hair. I know how to take care of it, I love braiding it, curling it, etc. it’s my favorite accessory and I think you can get soo creative with hair! I am incredibly picky with the products I use and once I find a good haircolorist, I usually stick with them for life.
2. I love my body and the things it can do. It always surprises me and I learn so much from it.
3. love that I forgive so easily.
4. love that if I want to do something, nothing in the world will stop me.

Come practice with me @alonewyork Monday the 17th of September at 8AM! If you don’t want to wake up that early, I’ll be also teaching the following Saturday at noon. I’ll be gone to LA a week after that and then I resume my classes October 1st! Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays. I might be teaching a beginners class too on the schedule - so stay tuned!
💛💗
This photo was taken almost a month back but it feels like soo much longer ago. People say time flies but for me with a baby every day feels like its own dimension!
