Photo by @amivitale. Today, was a sad day for elephants. In times like these, it is more important than ever to do all that we can to protect these incredible, gentle beings. Therefore, I am announcing the launch of a limited edition, fine art flash print sale to support the important work of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e ) on their one year anniversary. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to supporting the elephants and the Samburu community who are helping to foster a mutually supportive relationship between wildlife and people. For $225 plus shipping, you will receive a stunning 12 x 14 archival print of Mpala and the herd of elephants bathing and you can learn more about the sanctuary in my recent National Geographic magazine story, "Warriors Protecting Elephants." This sale only lasts until Dec. 10, 2017.

Reteti is the first ever community owned and run elephant sanctuary in all of Africa and provides a home to orphaned elephants as a result of poaching, human wildlife conflict and drought related issues. All of these elephants will one day be returned to the wild to live the life they were meant to lead. What’s happening at Reteti, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way humans relate to wild animals. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.

The image will be printed by the fine art studio of Paper & Ink on 12x14 inches (30.5x36 cm) and with Epson's Ultrachome HDX archival pigment ink on Canson's PrintMaKing Rag archival paper which is designed to meet museum longevity requirements. Follow the link in my profile to the shop page on my website to order and please add shipping ($25 domestic, $35 international). #bekindtoelephants #DontLetThemDisappear @nrt_kenya @tusk_org @conservationorg @kenyawildlifeservice @sandiegozoo @thephotosociety @natgeo #elephants #saveelephants #stoppoaching #kenya#northernkenya #magicalkenya #whyilovekenya #africa #everydayafrica#photojournalism #amivitale @nikonusa #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #nikond5 #protectelephants

Photo by @amivitale. Tracking dogs like Rocky have become vital to protecting wildlife in Tanzania and the $1.3 billion in tourism earnings annually they help bring to the country. A head of anti-poaching efforts was coming for a meeting at Manyara Ranch and overheard another passenger on the bus say, in response to a comment about the area’s elephants and their valuable ivory, “The dogs will follow you to where you live. Don’t even think about poaching there.” See our story on the dogs leading the charge against poaching in Biographic Magazine (@biographic_magazine) and follow @honeyguide_tz and @singita_ to learn more about these important initiatives.

Photo by @amivitale. Ranger Sareta Be Peter sits with DJ, at the Singita Grumeti Fund Reserve (@singita_), a conservatory adjacent to Serengeti National Park. DJ is one of four new rescue dogs - two chocolate Labrador mixes and two Belgian Malinois - that Grumeti got to complement the work done by @honeyguide_tz tracking dogs. These new dogs will detect wildlife contraband such as ivory, rhino horn, bush meat, ammunition, and pangolin scales. And soon, the dogs will be trained to detect wire snares and poisons as well.
The use of tracking dogs to fight poaching in Tanzania began as a trial with just a few dogs less than a decade ago. Today, it is an essential tool in Africa’s conservation efforts.

Photo by @amivitale. Congratulations to Dan Hammer (@econohammer), winner of the first ever Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award. Dan is the co-founder of Earth Genome, a nonprofit organization that seeks to put environmental data in the hands of decision makers. His current project, Overview News, would give journalists and other storytellers easy access to satellite imagery—and help them understand it. The end goal is supporting environmental news that is more lucid and reliable.

I'm thrilled to have nominated Katie Rowe who is representing the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern #Kenya. She recognized one simple truth - without local communities engaged and leading the effort, no conservation effort, no social effort for that matter, will ever be truly sustainable. Her selflessness, her determination, her grit, and her unfailing faith that the communities she serves will protect that which she loves, has helped create a new model for #conservation. A new model that pushes the boundaries on what wildlife conservation looks like. It's not easy and for each step forward there is a step back, but in that complexity and inelegance, in that diversity and chaos, is truly the way forward. She did not seek a simple answer but rather a lasting answer to the eternal question: how do we live with the expectations of a better life without undermining nature that supports us all.

Dogs are a vital part of the conservation tools in the nation, an effort led by the Honeyguide Foundation (@honeyguide_tz) which began its canine tracking program in 2011. Since that time, @honeyguide_tz has led successful joint operations with both community and government ranger teams in nine national parks and community-based conservation areas across northern Tanzania, leading to major arrests of poachers and confiscation of ivory, bush meat, weapons and other illicit items.

Photo by @amivitale. I am thrilled to announce that a young Kenyan woman, Katie Rowe, who I nominated for the first Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award is a finalist and tomorrow the winner will be announced by UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.
The Pritzker Award is the first environmental award to single out innovators under the age of 40. It is created to be an early investment in our future, giving today’s top young minds the community and financial support that will take their ideas to the next level. I am honored to have Katie represent all the incredible people at Reteti's elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) for this prestigious prize. I wish all of the co-finalists the best of luck and will let you all know who the winner is tomorrow evening.

Photo by @amivitale. Tracking dogs have become an important, cost-effective weapon in the fight against poaching in #Tanzania. Their use was pioneered by the conservation organization @honeyguide_tz. According to intelligence, a shooter’s charge can now be as much as 5 million Tanzanian Shillings ($2,200) in areas where they operate. Elsewhere, it may be 500,000 ($223) or as little as 200,000 ($89). Rocky leaps into his crate after a training session on the salty embankment of Manyara Lake. Rocky is a 7-year-old #Alsatian and one of Tanzania’s two original tracker dogs used to fight poaching. Something of a legend, he and another #dog once tracked a poachers’ trail for 7 hours, leading to a hidden stash of ivory weighing 60 kilograms, representing tusks from at least a half dozen elephants. Photo by @amivitale. Thanks to tracker dogs like Rocky and Rosdaz, elephant poaching at the 35,000-acre Manyara Ranch has been greatly reduced. In 2014 and 2015, poachers killed 17 elephants inside the ranch. In 2016, this number fell to zero. So far, there have been none in 2017. “These days, not only does an elephant die naturally, its tusks are left intact. This would have never happened before.” says Fidelis Olekashe, a security expert and former member of the Tanzanian military who manages the ranch.

Photo by @amivitale. A wild elephant at midnight comes to a watering hole near @sararacamp camp. She arrived with a herd of babies.

Traditionally elephants have been active during the day, and rested at night. Today though, elephants have become increasingly nocturnal as a means to evade poachers, a recent study showed. Females traveling with calves are particularly likely to make this shift to night.

Happily, community based conservation in Northern Kenya is having an impact and the people who live here are becoming the greatest protectors of the elephants. According to the Great Elephant Census, the proportion of illegally killed elephants in Northern Rangeland Trust (@nrt_kenya) member community conservancies has fallen 53% since 2012.

Here, life in the remote #desert town of Boujbeja, Mali, challenges the Arab Moors who live there but also offers them peace from the rest of the world. "Boujbeja" means the luck of the desert, but after a severe #drought in 1966, they have been fighting the constant push of the sands and must dig 70 meters under ground to get water.

For the last 18 years I've been working to cover under reported issues primarily about women, poverty, health and security. I didn’t realize it when I began but all of these issues are really about our resources and water in particular. Stories about the land are always stories about people. You cannot talk about one without the other. I’ve seen firsthand, how women in developing countries bear the greatest burden. #Women and #girls are the primary providers of water, and often spend hours each day hauling water from distant sources. In drought, they must walk for hours to find water for their families. Some regions of the world face devastating drought conditions, while other regions face rising seas and flooding.

Photo by @amivitale. I’m delighted to share a 360 video I was able to create with baby pandas in Chengdu, China which you can see on YouTube https://youtu.be/0XrH2WO1Mzs (link in profile) or on the @natgeowild Facebook page. It was a privilege to spend time with this very rare, finicky, endangered animal. As soon as I put the 360 degree cameras in the enclosure, the six month old bears would immediately find them and attack! They also loved to climb up my legs and extracting their teeth and claws was sometimes painful but well worth it. It’s hard to imagine, but these animals were once as mythical and elusive as Bigfoot. They have been around for millions of years, but were only made known to the western world within the last century. The first panda was captured alive only in 1936.
With only a few thousand in the world, and a national symbol for the Chinese, getting close, without interfering with their biology and conservation, and in a way that is acceptable to their understandably protective minders, was challenging. And in a region where bad environmental news is common, the Giant Panda might prove to be the exception and a testament to the perseverance and efforts of Chinese scientists and conservationists. By breeding and releasing pandas, augmenting existing populations, and protecting habitat, China may be on its way to successfully saving its most famous ambassador and in the process put the wild back into an icon.
