This illustration inspired by Headscarves and Hymens by @monaeltahawy which I’m currently reading. The book itself is a volcano of righteous rage. (Thanks @crimeiscommon for the rec!) Also I appreciate her articulation of the following point: “The niqab represents a bizarre reverence for the disappearance of women. It puts on a pedestal a woman who covers her face, who erases herself, and it considers that erasure the pinnacle of piety. Artwork for recent @symmetrymag story about the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) currently under construction in Chile. The LSST will be creating a movie out of the universe by capturing timelapses of the entire southern sky every day. ✨🌌

To maintain superconductivity and carry electrical currents as strong as bolts of lightning, the magnets at the heart of the LHC are maintained at a temperature of -271 degrees C - colder than outer space. To accomplish this, the magnets are kept submerged in liquid helium at -271 degrees C, which is cycled constantly between the magnets and a re-cooling compressor over a series of vacuum-insulated pipes. 😮🌌
