Photo by @taylorglenn // The face of El Capitan is impressive to say the least. Standing in the meadows below it is a bit of a challenge to get a perspective of how truly massive this rock is. But once twilight falls the flicker of headlamps from climbers on the face offers a sense of scale. It’s pretty amazing to see this transition from day to night and realize how many people are up there working towards the summit. Video by @TimLaman & @RussLaman | A spectacular misty morning flight over the rain forest of Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, one of the best remaining lowland rainforest sites in all of Borneo, and a refuge of Indonesia’s amazing biodiversity. Filmed back in July after a rainy night created the perfect misty conditions at dawn. I’m excited to be going back to Gunung Palung this week to follow up on my @NatGeo camera trapping project and see if we’ve gotten any unusual critters. Stay tuned in by following @TimLaman and I’ll be sharing some of the lesser-known rain forest animals of Borneo. #GunungPalung, #Kalimantan, #rainforest, #mist, #Borneo, #IndonesiaBiodiversity.

My Favorite Place | Photograph by Allison Blackburn-Billings (@alsprivateplace)
.
“[This is] my favorite place to go when I have a headache or just need to get away and think,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Allison Blackburn-Billings. “The beautiful blue skies and white wispy clouds accentuated by the thickly covered snowy mountain, the yellow larch trees mixed in between the green pines, the cool air — perfection.” This photo was selected for the October 12, 2018 edition of our Photos of the Week series.

“Autumn is my favorite season and photos like this embody it entirely. I do like snow a little later in the fall, but in this photo the colors the trees contrasting with the crisp snow create a balanced image that lets our eyes play across the frame. This view is certainly the best antidote to a headache. Thank you for sharing your favorite place with us, Allison!” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

Next in my series of under visited places is Sukhothai! 🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sukhothai is the former imperial capital of the Sukhothai Empire. The ruins of the capital can be found in the historical park of the same name just outside of the modern city of Sukhothai.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sukhothai is located approximately halfway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Despite being situated between two of the most popular destinations in Thailand, Sukhothai gets very few visitors in comparison. Most people either fly or take a train, which skips Sukhothai entirely.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is really too bad because Sukhothai is an amazing place. I’ve often described it as a smaller, cleaner version of Angkor, Cambodia. There are almost 200 ruins spread over 70 square kilometers. There are very few visitors to the park and you can stroll about the grounds historical park is which only a few square kilometers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The park has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of the most significant historical sites in Thailand. It think it is a superior visit to Ayutthaya which is usually crowded with visitors on day trips from Bangkok.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I visited I pretty much had the park to myself. You can walk amongst the temple ruins or you can rent a bike. They have paved paths that you can ride on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The easiest way to get to Sukhothai is either by bus or train, from Bangkok or Chiang Mai. I recommend people stop here if they are going between the two cities as it is one place in the country which should not be missed.

Video by @la.luna.asmr

While countless people find relief for tension and anxiety through whispered voices or softly tapping fingernails in ASMR videos, Penny Clarke (@la.luna.asmr) shares a different source of calm: hands squeezing soap from brilliantly colored sponges. “I’ve always found cleaning a great help with anxiety, which is something that affects my life every day,” says the self-described “full-time mum” (with a degree in criminology) from England. And as gratifying as viewers find her videos, it’s clear that making them comforts Penny, too. “The combination of water sounds and the clean element is the perfect thing to help me relax.” Penny is also grateful for the new creative outlet she’s found in the ASMR community. “I have never been a creative person,” she says, “but I feel like these videos are my art, and I want to keep improving and getting better all the time.” See more of Penny’s soothing sponge sounds — today on our story and new to our IGTV channel.
