Appalachians Against Pipelines

It’s day 165 of the Yellow Finch tree sits outside of Elliston, VA! That’s 165 days of protecting this area from the destruction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
.
As Lauren, one of the initial tree sitters here, commented a few days ago, “Thanks to the tree sits, this hillside has been able to experience another winter, and another chance at rebirth come springtime. Thanks to the tree sits, there is currently one less forest degraded and destroyed for profit, one less forest ecosystem suffering from fragmented habitat and biodiversity loss. Thanks to the tree sits, there is still a thriving, functioning forest on the hillside above Yellow Finch Lane in Elliston, Va.”

Today a pipeline fighter locked themself to a horizontal drill at a Mountain Valley Pipeline worksite in Pittzylvania County, VA.
.
This site is at the tail end of the 300-mile-plus pipeline route.
.
“We do this for all life on earth, for the ones not yet brave enough to take a stand against the injustices of this world,” stated the anonymous pipeline fighter who took action this morning. “We do this for each other, for every living being on this planet, because we all need clean water and clean air to live.”
.
Today is also DAY 150 of the Yellow Finch tree sits! These aerial blockades have been protecting some of the last standing trees in the pipeline’s path for 150 days and counting.

A cold morning on Day 146 of the Yellow Finch tree sits! Check out this icy sponge from the ground support kitchen.
.
These sitters are “standing” strong in their trees in the path of the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
.
Still no word from the federal judge on the pending legal case in which MVP requested a restraining order against sitters and supporters. Stay tuned!

A note from the Yellow Finch tree sits. Today is DAY 120 of these sits blocking the path of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Since this post was written, Global Security (MVP’s private security) has set up a “camp” on site to monitor the sits.
.
It appears that in the first few days of this new year, Mountain Valley Pipeline may be escalating their actions against myself and my treesitting friend. MVP may cut us off from resupplies, or may attempt to extract us from these dear trees ... only time will tell.
.
In just a few days, there will be an injunction hearing upon MVP’s request, against us tree sitters. If this injunction goes through, this means that MVP will technically have permission to bring the U.S. Marshals in to wreak havoc in whatever way they deem fit. .
In addition to the fine job these MVP fellows have done of hanging papers on trees (not without some difficulty ascending and descending this slippery, slippery hill), they have informed us that they will be setting up overnight security to keep an eye on us ne'er-do-wells. While this may sound ominous to some, I promise you it provides mostly entertainment on our part (they are some seriously goofy folks).
.
We are not worried.
.
This is not our first or last rodeo. So do not lose hope, or whatever it is that you hold onto in these times. Feel these little liberatory moments nipping at your heels. This is it. This is freedom. And not that hollow word howled about in every patriotic trope, but TRUE freedom. When time seems to stop. When our friends become our comrades, and our comrades, our friends. And when those in control lose it, even just for a second.
.
We can no longer look at liberation as the end goal of some revolutionary moment or era. We always have that power within us. I am liberated right now, sitting what feels like miles above my enemies, closer to heaven than my old pastor ever thought I'd be.
.
So come here! Or go somewhere! Somewhere you can feel the earth beneath your feet. Just begin! It's that simple. If you're looking, you'll find us.

UPDATE 8 PM Tues: This brave individual has been extracted from their perch, arrested, arraigned (bail was set at $3,000), and bailed out of jail!
.
Original post: THIS BLOCKADE IS STILL HAPPENING! 10 hours of stopped work!
.
Know what else is pretty damn impressive? The tree sits in Virginia have been blocking the Mountain Valley Pipeline path for 84 days. EIGHTY FOUR DAYS!!!
.
We can’t do this shit without you. Show your support with your wallet (and/or your friend’s wallet, your mom’s wallet, your neighbor’s wallet ... you get the idea).

It’s a cold morning but we’re out here blocking Mountain Valley Pipeline construction on Ellison Ridge in WV! Work has been stopped for 2 hours already.
.
This #givingtuesday, help us stop this pipeline: bit.ly/supportmvpresistance
.
Meanwhile, the tree sits in Virginia are standing strong on Day 84!
.
Below is a statement from the pipeline fighter:
“‘Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore ...’ — Valerie Solanas
.
I do this for our futures.
I do it for the dancing trees; the ice.
I do this for utopia.
There will be no cars in utopia, no rich men to exploit us.
Pipelines, oil, and the corporations that destroy our world will be forgotten.
I am only one person, and this is only one action, but there are many more pipe layers, excavators, machines of exploitation. There are over 300 miles of pipe planned. EQT must face opposition at every mile. This is about more than a pipeline, more than a view.
I do this in opposition to the ravages of capitalism, a system created by white men to benefit a select few through the exploitation of the land — our land and our love.
I will not let capitalism take my love. I will fight for our futures until together, we create utopia.”

Below is a statement from the pipeline fighter atop the boom tractor: .
"I was born a white settler on land that was stolen from its people, witnessing the pain of peoples stolen from their land. To my fellow settlers: who are you responsible to? If it’s not the spirits of the ones you have hurt then you are definitely cursed.
.
America itself has always been cursed. In a dystopian age of war on terror, terror still reigns supreme. Genocide is not the exception but the rule. In the words of my personal hero, former AIM leader John Trudell, industrial civilization has been, “literally, the most bloodthirsty, brutalizing system imposed on this planet.” We are living in the land of bulldozed tombs.
.
Two years ago (on November 20, 2016), a crowd of people burning sage, playing drums and shouting “Water is life!” stormed the barricaded highway 1806 bridge by Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock. The police responded by firing teargas, percussion grenades, and dousing the crowd with water in subfreezing temperatures. Choking, hypothermic and blinded by the gas, my friend led me by the hand away from the line. There are many who will never forget that night.
.
It’s going to keep getting worse before it gets worse. If you’re halfway interested in autonomy, it’s time to get a decent pair of boots and some friends. To keep your head up to perceive what’s around you, to think strategically and critically. To learn and practice skills and to decolonize your idea of survival. The border crisis, natural disasters, and rise of the far right are probably not going to go anywhere soon.
.
That being said: who are you responsible to? I’m here with the people that don’t vote, the ones without IDs. The little birds and deer and flowers and stars, the dormant seeds and ancestors. We have always been here. We will always be here. Catch us if you can in the hills and the dark and the woods.
