Can’t say I’ve ever done a podcast interview until now. Fellow Portland photographer @wmanthonyphoto invited me on his show @thisisbackdrop , a podcast about photography and creativity. We talked about the Graveyard Point, behind the scenes on Deadliest Catch, maneuvering waves in the Bering Sea among others. Pretty nice to communicate in long form for once. Check out his show on iTunes or www.thisisbackdrop.com

Another slow day of fishing, another sick dance party on the skiff deck waiting for Kvichak salmon with @907killa and Alex.

That time when @tfsohn and I got overrun by the mighty kvichak Sockeye run with no power roller and a plugged net too heavy to bring in the boat. We spent the next hours picking fish over the side until dangerously overloaded then finally getting rescued 30 min after the period ended by two fisherwoman @mgpredl and @ericafos who were passing by wondering what the hell was going on over there. #commercialfishing #fishing #bristolbay #mightykvichak #graveyardpoint

Salmon are late to our section of Bristol Bay and the brown bears are getting hangry.

Volunteers with Sea Shepherd haul aboard an abandoned gillnet with 13 giant rotting Totoaba Seabass ensnared in the Gulf of California. These illegal nets are hiding beneath the surface with no buoy markers to catch fish that are super valuable to wealthy Chinese on the black market. .

The Vaquita, a tiny porpoise that lives in the gulf of California, Mexico is in its final years and will soon vanish from the face of the Earth. There is estimated to be less than thirty still alive in the gulf, down from a couple hundred last time I photographed the story of the Vaquita for Audubon magazine back in 2011. I recently went back to San Felipe on assignment for Pacific Standard Magazine @pacificstand and joined @seashepherd during their actions to stop illegal fishing for the endangered Totoaba seabass which also ensnares the Vaquita. The story is now in print. Link in my profile.

Sea Shepherd crew retrieves an illegal longline with hooks meant to catch endangered Totoaba Seabass in the Gulf of California. The unusually large swim bladder in the Totoaba is prized in China (something to do with male vitality of course) and super valuable on the black market.

This is the bow of the m/v Sam Simon as we patrolled the waters near San Felipe dragging for illegal nets playing cat and mouse games with poachers.

Back in January when i was posting stories about the pink lake monster of Western Australia, evil koalas, and rabid flocks of cockatoos, i was actually there being filmed for a @natgeo x @kiamotors commercial where i was on an epic high speed photo extravaganza driving a Kia Sorrento, photographing caterpillars and emus with intensity. It was also my first crack at doing voiceover. This was certainly a deviation from my usual non commercial exploits, but was a fun experience. Thanks to the super fun team: written and directed by @sanilmenda DP Allan Myles, Drone shots by @danproud

You can find a link to the full 2 min spot by googling “A Curious Quest Corey Arnold” or clicking the link in my profile today only.

Photographed for Far & Away, a new business travel mag by @natgeo and @wsj I recently photographed the world of tequila production for Far & Away. ‘Tequila Rocks’ was an epic journey into the blue agave fields East of Guadalajara, to the rowdy bars and distilleries of Tequila town.
