@SMITHstudioct is excited to present Elsabé Milandri’s first solo show at the gallery, Wind shifts at eight, an extensive and varied collection from the artist combining paintings, drawings and silkscreen monotypes.

Wind shifts at eight sees Milandri delve further into the unknown, seeking to bypass her inhibitions and explore intuition, uncertainty and the potential in adversity. Her works are explorations in instinctive mark making where Milandri invites immediacy and intensity to her process.
.
The exhibition will run untill 11 December.

HOICK (@hoick), Pollock #4, 2017, Cotton, 75 x 40cm & Pollock #1, Offset lithography and monotype on paper, 53 x 43cm
.
.
For the @fnbjoburgartfair Hoick presented a show within a show titled ‘Shall We Move On?’. Hoick’s booth posed as a gallery art shop to play with the notion of art as the commodification of ideas. By mimicking a gallery art shop, the artists draw attention to the cumbersome distribution and reach of original art in a world where mimicry and counterfeit versions threaten to blur the line between truth and simulation.
.
“Sometimes the art shop is the highlight of going to an exhibition, and often it is the only place one can actually buy something to take home, be it a mug, a print, a bookmark or a tea towel,” says Dale Lawrence (@_dalelawrence).
.
“The show functions much like a room of mirrors, in which everything is reflecting something else, making it quite difficult to decipher the truth from fiction,” says Morné Visagie (@sincerelyyvescharles).

Hoick (@hoick) is a creative studio and loose art collective founded in 2014, centred around the partnership of Dale Lawrence and Claire Johnson. Hoick is based in Cape Town and operates out of their studio in the Bo-Kaap. From a primarily graphic background, the group has worked in a diverse range of modes, from branding and film posters to installation and sculpture, both commissioned and produced for exhibition. In May 2015, Hoick produced a collaborative exhibition at Smith Studio, joined by Franco Fernandes, Ben Johnson and Bella Knemeyer. The exhibition was an investigation of the inability of objects (monuments were case-in-point) to communicate to a universal audience. The exhibition consisted of large scale papier-mâché based mixed-media sculptures, accompanied by supporting print work, painting and drawing. Frequent collaborators include Franco Fernandes, Ben Johnson, Bella Knemeyer and Matthew Freemantle.

“We have the ability to fight and affect change but simultaneously a feeling that we need to surrender: we are a confused, muted generation. We are presently in an ambiguous time. Old structures need to be unshackled. The younger generation is moving swiftly and is unbuckling the infrastructures that need to break. Yet, it is these structures on which we learnt how to climb. So, what now? We can either remain inertly as we were, or we can start to listen and start to transform.“ - Elize Vossgatter .

Elize Vossgatter’s (@elizevossgatter) paintings are fueled with clashing colour and ominous figures set in a swirl of freshly unconstructed mark-making and an edgy aesthetic.
.
.
Vossgatter's paintings could be described as figurative allegories - she is motivated to paint by the social currents around her - news of border shifting, terror paranoia, preemptive dislocation, migration, dystopia etc - yet these themes read as a pervasive undercurrent that is read through the relationships between figures; as opposed to direct commentary.
.
.
Her process is multi-pronged and often seemingly illogical; preferring the intuitive abstract connections to the linear methods of creative problem solving- injected energetically into her surroundings. A painterly interrogation into philosophical and psychological mores questioning group consciousness and accountability: What are we doing to ourselves? What are we doing to each other? What are we doing to our environment? What power have we got to transform ourselves? Is having choice power enough?

Stephen Allwright, ‘fair hair friend in dark stripes’, 2016, Ink and tea on Fabriano, 30 x 21cm
.
.
Allwright has refined an uncompromisingly honest and unmistakable style that is at times erotic and even violent but more often heart-wrenchingly tender. The work is a form of self-portraiture, although inverted: with the unfolding image as his guide, Allwright attempts to distill and decipher his impulsive responses to the manifest world by creating what he calls “an emblematic shorthand".
.
"I usually meditate on a particular idea that has interested me while I walk with my dogs. The sound of my footfalls, my breathing and the dogs’ panting creates a rhythm that I try to include in a work. The degree to which I can achieve 'accuracy' through this process - including the context in which the process is played out - is reflected in the ability of said work to become a satisfactory repository, and thus a trigger, of a particular state of mind."
.
For subject material, Allwright looks no further than his immediate vicinity. There is his own body, that of his wife, his dogs and the odd acquaintance who might cross his path. These figures are contorted, combined, mutated and gently abstracted to either harmonious or jarring effect. "I inevitably insinuate myself into this process and become integrated within the emerging forms."

Stephen John Allwright was born in Prince Albert in the Great Karoo in 1969. He received a Bachelor of Social Science(economics and politics) degree from the University of Cape Town with honours in Economics. Stephen is a self-taught artist and has been practising since 1998. He currently lives and works in Barrydale.
.
Allwright began painting in earnest after leaving Cape Town to spend two years in near complete isolation in Die Hel, a remote village in the Swartberg Mountains near his birthplace, Prince Albert. Since then he has been prolific, exhibiting most recently at the Tyburn Gallery in London and at @smithstudioct here in Cape Town.

Jeanne Gaigher, Reservoir Girl, 2016, Acrylic and ink on canvas, 171 x 181cm
.
.
Dog Suit formed part of @jangaigher’s second solo exhibition st @smithstudioct titled Wieg. In this collection of paintings and painted-upon photographs, Gaigher uses the notion of ‘wieg’, or ‘vacillate’, as her method to negotiate a personal archive of photographs and audio recordings collected from her day-to-day experiences. Moving between this archive of recordings and the recollection of the lived experiences themselves, Gaigher extracts new translations of this information through the process of painting. Renavigating these recordings of her personal experiences, Gaigher produces multiple scenes for the viewer to move through and experience a personal sense of the disjointedness of the familiar. .

.
“I believe the work is reflective of a state of mind of where one is new to the world of ‘Adulting’ and in my case, it has been fast-paced. During the course of the creation I was immersed with different projects occurring simultaneously that would consume most of my time. Every night I would return to an empty box - with no one to greet but my paintings. This pattern made me question my life, asking myself ‘Is this it?’, what is the right amount of ‘busy’ before it starts to intervene with one’s well-being. I had to make a conscious decision that I need to do more living - otherwise my picture frame will always be a single figure.” - Banele Khoza

Katharien de Villiers (@kathariendevilliers) recently had her first solo exhibition, A Bonnet of Gatsby's,  with @smithstudioct. The lion’s share of her materials are found objects, recycled and repurposed in her sculptures and installations. Evidence of craft and making are overtly evident in the work.
.
.
“I want people to think about how my pieces were made,” says de Villiers. “I have no patience so my process is immediate. I work fast, which I think is an honest way to produce because the thinking becomes a lot broader than the work itself,” she says. “I’m comfortable with uncertainty.”
.
.
Fun, free association and a love of the slapstick are prevalent in de Villiers’ portfolio. A jester at heart, she goads and tempts her audience, fully conscious of the waning effect of shock tactics in a country and a world where truth is increasingly stranger than fiction”
.
.
“It’s not about tricking anybody or blindsiding people with something profound. My work is about physical things and our physical response to them. In South Africa art appreciation is strongly linked to status. Basically, I think we should fucking relax and allow each other to either like a work or not.” .

Gabrielle Raaff (@gabrielleraaff), Old Masters Series, 2017, Water-based oil on canvas, dimensions variable. .
.
Trail, a collection of ethereal landscapes by visual artist Gabrielle Raaff. The show is Raaff’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Raaff’s collection is a distillation of visual responses gathered on walks in the Greenbelt in Cape Town’s affluent southern suburbs, part of a larger area from which many non-white residents were evicted in the wake of the apartheid regime’s Group Areas Act. Flanked by vast, often garish mansions, the forest walk has become the preserve of mainly white suburban dog walkers. Raaff’s work studies the effect of the area’s past on its own geography to pose wider questions about how history is retained in our natural world. More than landscape paintings, these are honest acts aimed at revealing new insight into our understanding of our environment. “The initial appreciation of the beauty of the landscape becomes stained with the awareness of the history of the area,” says Raaff. “These paintings are a conscious acknowledgment of the inequality and discord that is evident in our South African suburbs. Green is the colour of wealth and privilege.” In the journey from my studio to the Greenbelt, I follow a route through some of the most affluent suburbs in South Africa. They are referred to as the ‘leafy areas’ as opposed to the sandy, sparsely vegetated areas of the Cape flats and our many townships. The trail itself is abundantly green and voluptuous. The obvious imbalance in our neighbourhoods throughout the country is often accentuated by the difference in the natural environment.”

Gabrielle Raaff (@gabrielleraaff) was born in 1970 in Johannesburg and lives and works in Cape Town. She graduated with a BAFA (HDE) from the University of Stellenbosch, in 1992. "Raaff's works begin with a photographic image,. And while this image serves as a jumping-off point only, it seems that we are repeatedly brought back to the photographic process. It's as if the medium of photography, and its ability to fix an image is what piques her interest. " - Paul Edmunds

The artist works with ethereality. She uses the media of ink, watercolour and water based oil as a vehicle for alluding to the form, the function and the emotion of her subject. Landscape and its reference both to actual place and places of the subconscious are what can be found lurking in her paintings. .

Marsi van de Heuvel (@marsi_vdh) (b. 1987) grew up in her mothers art classroom, with unlimited access to materials and surrounded by books on old masters. She has spent countless hours observing, exploring and practicing. After trying her hand in film photography and finding the practice too creatively restrictive; her innate inquisitiveness led her to study further.
She moved on to study Fine Art at Ruth Prowse and was drawn to the constantly expanding boundaries of art, and it’s invitation to examine life. She graduated in 2010, majoring in painting. Despite most of her current work being executed with fineliner pens, van de Heuvel still sees herself as a painter. She approaches the color and layers in her works as if she was working with oil paint; this gives the ‘drawings’ a radiant quality.
The subjects of mountains, volcanoes, seascapes, and outer space portrayed in her work, have always contemplated perspectives of who we are and where we are. Van de Heuvel is interested in art as therapy, for the artist and the viewer. Her most recent work of abstract drawings and drawings of and flowers explore our inner, intimate landscape and the beauty and warmth of human connection.

.
Snake Man, David Brits’ first solo show at SMITH, commemorates the life of John Wood, David Brits’ late maternal grandfather. Wood was one of South Africa’s most prominent reptile experts, snake catchers and snake showmen. Over a period of sixty years he caught thousands of snakes, spiders, scorpions, lizards and frogs for both medical research and the development of snake and spider antivenoms. Wood was a prolific poet, photographer and filmmaker, and shared his great passion for reptiles through these mediums as well as with his traveling snake show, which toured the country from the 1950-70s. .
.
Brits’ takes his inspiration from the large archive of photographs, films, newspaper cuttings, letters, poems, and priceless books which he inherited. Working across a wide range of media including drawing, linocuts and lithographic prints, in Snake Man, Brits contemplates the life of his grandfather, his legacy, and the perennial power of the snake. .

Closer I, Closer II, Closer III, 2017, Automotive paint and glitter glue on canvas, 150 x 100cm
.
.
I draw a lot of inspiration from people's lives, personal memories, popular culture and fictionalised human emotion. Thoughts developed from these sections of life drive me towards objects, images, sentiment and materials that I use to create my work. This ranges from old telephones, pop songs, milky pens and glitter glue, video and more recently nail polish, glitter, slime and resins.
.
.
A lot of my subject matter comes from experiencing the world through my own skin, and having to understand what that is and what that means. I would say the work shows an exploration into ideas of the human condition, but really I think it's more specific than that most of the time. I like to think about how we see ourselves and how we fantasize ourselves into being someone else. I like to dream about escaping - your life, your situation, your body, even your mind. I like to talk about Zombie Apocalypses because they are yet another situation in which you don't have to be yourself anymore - all bets are off at that point. There will be no bond on your house, no career to master, no marriage, no kids probably - everything will be gone. I think there's something really positive in that.
