2017 has been a great year once again!
Our three England squad members were all reselected onto squad representing England in two grand slams. Niamh came 2nd in kumite and 1st in team kumite at the first of these and Gemma came 2nd in kumite and 1st in team kumite at the second.
We had more members represent our club at both national and regional level this year which paid off with Hannah finishing 3rd in kumite at the KUGB Nationals and Evie finishing 1st in Kata at the KUGB National Youths. They both achieved this at their first national events! At the Gateshead Youths, Dylan won kata for the 3rd year and together with Niamh and Gemma, won team kata for the 3rd year, resulting in him being awarded best overall competitor. These results are amongst many others throughout the year.
We finished the competition year with the KUGB Northern Regions with 23 members competing! We had many results including Joel finishing 1st in kumite.
The club was successful with gradings this year. In March, Krysia, Jamie, James and Abby all achieved their Shodan at Glasgow. Later in the year, Evie also achieved Shodan at Sunderland. The club held three kyu gradings this year, with students achieving a pass and a half grade at all three.
Several members participated in the KUGB Young Leaders Scheme; Evie, Louis, Jamie, Evan, Abby and Luke all achieved their Bronze award, and Evie and Louis also achieved their Silver. Gemma and Krysia both qualified as full KUGB Instructors this year which takes several years to achieve.
The club took part in many fundraising events throughout the year, including bag packs, Ashington summer fayre, and the John Talbot funding. This year was also the 10th anniversary of our Karate on the Beach fundraising event, which had it's highest turnout yet!
The year ended with our Christmas party, enjoyed by all. Lennon was awarded Best Overall Attendance, Luke with Most Improved junior, Callum with Best Overall Junior, Beverley with Most Improved Senior, and Evie with Best Overall Senior! We would like to wish all our members and their families a happy new year, and look forward to more success in 2018! #proudtobekugb #kugb
