Wrangled: When the herd thundered into the open field, one of the skilled horsemen lassoed one of the reindeer. The relationships between the animals and people never cease to amaze me. It’s beautiful to watch in all its forms- relying on each other for survival and sustenance. The Dukha in Northern Mongolia have had this relationship with reindeer for over 3000 years. They do not kill the reindeer for food. In fact, it is against the law to kill them. Primarily, they are used for their milk and some are used for transportation. #projectinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeanephotography #audreyjeaneinstills #reindeer #nomad #justmigrate #mongolia

Through The Trees: The reindeer in the Dukha community were returning home from their day of grazing. When they are herded in, they thunder between the trees as members of the community race to grab their ropes and tie them safely for the night. In this early evening, a storm was rolling in and the grey sky cast a blanket of quiet and dimness on the forest. I was working on long exposure shots to show the movement of the herd- part of The Motion Instills project I’m working on. During my set up I happened to adjust my exposure settings and added a ND filter to my camera. I took one quick snap and then shifted the settings again. It wasn’t until I looked through the thousands of photos more carefully, that I saw the result of that moment was more of a painting than a picture. It has become, by far, one of my absolute favorite photographs. #justmigrate #audreyjeane #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #adventureinstills #projectinstills #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #yourshotphotographer #wildlifenetwork #yourshot @burnmagazine @natgeoyourshot @natgeo

Daybreak: in the early morning there is such a quiet peace in the Taiga Forest. Just after the gentle dusting of morning snow, and moments before the community came to life, a young buck strolled through the forest. He came up to me looking for salt ( they love salt) of which I had none. But he licked my hand just to verify and then wandered on his way. It was hours before the rest of the herd would be untied and moved out to their grazing location. There was a true peace about this morning. Worth getting out of a warm@sleeping bag and braving a crisp and cold dawn. #audreyjeane #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #adventureinstills #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #mongolia #justmigrate #dawn #sunrise #canonlife #yourshotphotographer #yourshot

The Shaman: His name is Ganbat and he is one of the Shamen in Dukha community. He is the community leader and one of the spiritual advisors. We happened to meet him early in our trip as we picked him up from a small town on our long journey to the Taiga Forest. So yes, we essentially picked up a hitchhiking Shaman since it’s one of the very few ways to get to where we were going. I had to laugh at the strange moments I was having as we journeyed closer to this very distant and almost magical place. At first, I had no idea how one acts around a Shaman. Do you approach him? Does he talk to you? Can he tell what I’m thinking? Does he sense something about me that I don’t know about myself? Hahaha- after awhile I had to snap myself out of the ridiculousness. He was a man, whose spiritual journey connected him to the world because he chose to be aware of that connection. He was also a kind man who opened up not only his home, but his community to strangers traveling. While it’s not intensely popular yet ( mostly because getting there is a challenge unto itself) there were more visitors than I expected. But they welcomed us openly. The community took time to care for us, to show us their culture, to tolerate our endless questions and many requests for photos. Ganbat was one of my favorite people to spend time with. I hope my future holds so many more moments of understanding his life and the chance to be part of his world- if only for a short time. #audreyjeane #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #amaninstills #adventureinstills #projectinstills #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #audreyjeaneinstills #mongolia #reindeer #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #canonlife #portrait #shawman #justmigrate

A Small World: At the end of a very long day, off-roading in a Russian van ( they are impressive machines that know few bounds), we were welcomed with open hearts and arms by our gracious hosts. In a ger with a map, tea, some food, and a pot of melting snow over a wood burning stove, two Shaw men, a woman, and five strangers sat on the floor with an atlas and bridged thousands of miles with laughter and a little translation. Eventually, we called him Teddy Bear ( one of the Shaw Men). This was his home . His smile was boundless and his laugh was deep and rich. He had such a wonderful sense of humor and happily teased us as we laid on the ground taking photos from different angles. His wife was kind and warm. They had set up our own gers for the evening and made sure we were comfortable in their home. Later we found out people came from all over Mongolia to have him perform his ceremonies for them. He is a great healer. But on the floor of that ger, laughing and opening his home to strangers from across the world, he was a new friend. In moments like these I think of how grateful I am that I have somehow, in my life, found the road to this home to sit and break bread with these incredible people. It’s crazy to think that in my adult life I have sat in the homes of so many strangers thousands of miles away and left them feeling more like neighbors than I feel toward the people I live near at home. In a world where so many things just don’t seem right, I try and remember that you get what you give. You get back from the world what you put into it. So give a little of yourself out there. Put into the world a little laughter and kindness and love. It comes back and touches your soul. I can’t thank them enough for being part of my journey. #audreyjeane #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #shawman #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeanephotography #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #neighbor #adventureinstills #afamilyinstills #canonlife #canon #justmigrate #beyondboundries

Morning: I woke up just before dawn. It was blistering cold and peacefully quiet. You could hear the hooves of the wandering and untied reindeer crunch through the snow dusted ground. Almost 30 min into wandering the forest and the community, the snow began to fall. It was so quiet you could hear the snowflakes hit the trees and collect on the ground. Not too many people were up yet. Down the road I ran into one of the women doing morning chores. I first saw her as she was cleaning a portion of the stove pipe outside. She saw me and smiles and went about her morning. When I walked down the road she was putting things away in her storage area. It’s a place they keep supplies, dry food, keep food etc. I love this photo for the peacefulness and that this beautiful woman colors the forest against a freshly white canvas of snow. I’m not a morning person-but this morning made me love so much about the day breaking. #audreyjeane #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #awomaninstills #natureinstills #audreyjeanephotography #audreyjeaneinstills #reindeer #morning #justmigrate #canonlife #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #stilllife #woman #snow #coldplaces #adventureinstills

Motion Series: Life happens in motion. I’ve always loved the medium of photography because it lets me both capture the sharp second of a moment but also enables me to capture the movement of the moment in so many creative ways. Over the years I’ve been collecting the photographs of movement in my travels. I’m drawn to painting-like style that slow shutters and camera movement can create. The more I photograph, the more I know I’m drawn to perfecting the art of motion on photographs. I’ve chosen, in recent years, to embark on adventures that take me to cultures that are nomadic. I love the feeling of moving in such a big and beautiful space among animals, families, and the elements. With this series, I want to see how the milliseconds blur together to capture the continuance of life and our movement within this life. This was taken in the Northern most part of Mongolia during my visit with the Dukha community. Reindeer are the heart of their culture. This is one of my favorite in the motion series. #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #motioninstills #projectinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #canonlife #abstract #lifeinmotion #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #art

Ready To Ride: I loved photographing the man in the hat. In my mind he became the James Dean of the Dukha, always keeping his cool, almost always casually smoking a cigarette, and always wearing his hat. This was the day we all rode out to the frozen lake. We waited in a large field for the rest of the herd to come through. The few reindeer and their riders took a quick break before forging ahead. #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #adventureinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #reindeerherders #reindeer #mongolia #canonlife #yourshot #yourshotphotographer #justmigrate #adventure

A Family That Works Together: Ganbat and Purevee May be some of the most gracious hosts I’ve had the pleasure of staying with. Their home was always open and their hearts always kind. Ganbat would seem almost quietly stern most of the time but then I’d see him crack a little smile that was followed by a light chuckle. I didn’t know Mongolian ( though I’ve been enough times now that I should know more than I do) and he knew very little English. But it’s amazing how much you can say without many words. They are quite an interesting couple with Ganbat being a Shaw Man. She stayed by his side through some difficult years as he honed his craft and spirituality. On this morning, he came outside to help his wife sew parts of the Teepee. #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #afamilyinstills #projectinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeaneinstills #audreyjeanephotography #sewing #goremote #canonlife #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #justmigrate #adventureinstills

Woman Of The Forest: I’ll never forget the first time I saw Tsetsgee. She was reaching around the forest catching the reindeer as they were coming in for the day. We had just arrived on our white horses. She turned around when I was nearby and she smiled, playfully stuck her tongue out at me, giggled, and then ran off to catch more Reindeer. She would catch me photographing her and laugh. It was one of my favorite moments in meeting the wonderful people there. She is one of only a few Shaw Women. There is a quiet strength about her even though she is mostly shy. Later in the week, she performed a traditional ritual in her Teepee for us. Those photos will come soon. #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #awomaninstills #projectinstills #audreyjeane #adventureinstills #audreyjeaneinstills #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #remotelife #reindeer #justmigrate #canonlife #magicalforest

Angel In The Forest: The magic of the Taiga Forest is not lost on the young. I was setting up a long exposure motion shot, trying to catch the reindeer as they were herded in for the night through the forest. There is no exact time, they just arrive when they arrive. When they do you see the families running out to grab the ropes that are tied to them and then they tie them to the trees. It’s a sight to see a herd of Reindeer come through the trees. There is a low rumble and then loud crunching of the ground under the hooves. I never got tired of them coming in and going out to graze. In the moments in between, this beautiful little soul played hide and seek and ran around the trees, jumping and laughing in the snow. She settled for a moment, watching me before she turned her gaze quietly outward to the forest, waiting for the reindeer to come home. #reindeerherders #taiga #mongolia #projectinstills #audreyjeane #audreyjeaneinstills #adventureinstills #audreyjeanephotography #achildinstills #canonlife #justmigrate #yourshotphotographer #yourshot #children #forest
