THE PLIGHT OF THE VODAFONE DOG: PEGGY, THE ABANDONED PUG
Peggy was found by #AARTPune volunteers a few days ago. She was bleeding, malnourished, and terrified beyond her wits. Peggy is what one often refers to as a 'Vodafone Dog', also known as a Pug. After 7 long years of faith, love, and commitment, she was dumped on the road like a mere plaything, never to be seen, hugged, or loved again by the people she still calls family.
When we first saw Peggy, we realised that she had been attacked by other dogs, and was so badly wounded that the inside of her ear canal had been eaten away by maggots. This has resulted in imbalance issues, and Peggy struggles to so much as get up, let alone walk properly. Not only this, but her vision is slightly impaired, and because she has been so badly bred, her snout (like that of most pugs) is abnormal, resulting in her tongue perpetually sticking out. At #ResQ, she struggles to so much as notice that there is a bowl of fresh food in front of her -- imagine what life on the streets must have been like for this old, ailing, extremely human-dependent dog!
While pets cannot comprehend the callous reasons for their abandonment, what they CAN see as clear as day is the fact that their family is NOWHERE to be seen. Peggy still looks around her with wide, hopeful eyes, no doubt wondering when her family will find her, hold her, and take her to the safety of her home. On her first day at ResQ, her spirit had been so severely shattered that she couldn't even move an inch. Two days later, she is slowly learning to to walk about on her own, is interacting with her new surroundings, and is actively seeking out company and cuddles. But not all animals are as strong as Peggy is.
To #abandon a pet is not to simply dispose of an unwanted ornament in your home. To abandon is a pet is to impose a death sentence on a being that has no control over their own existence; an animal whose sole motivation in life is to please, love, and adore US -- their family.
