#grimdragon - favourite book of 2018 so far

I cheated because not only can I not pick between these two, there are others like the Graveyard book that I want on there 😂

It's been a very good reading year so far and I'm very grateful 😊

#grimdragon - long titles

Books that I found out about a bit late but absolutely love. These three are my favourite from the series. And not many can beat them when it comes to long-ass titles and whimsy!

The #grimdragon prompt today is DNF. I am instead going to share a post about the opposite. A book I read in a day yesterday.

~Whatever happens, when you get back to Olympus, when you're a god again, remember. Remember what it's like to be human.~
*
"This, I thought, was being human. Standing on the tarmac, watching mortals load the body of a friend and hero into the cargo hold, knowing that they would never be coming back. Saying goodbye to a grieving young woman who had done everything to help us, and knowing that you could never repay her, never compensate her for all that she'd lost."
*
Rick Riordan's books have almost never let me down and never in the way so many others have. The Burning Maze is no different. And yet it's different in its darkness and the very real, very heavy truths. Despite so many prophecies about doom and the end of the world and all the pathos that comes with Gods and demigods and heroes, the mythology-inspired books by the author have always had levity and hope and lots of sarcasm and humour. While this book does have those trademarks, they are noticeably less; overwhelmed by the sombre. Not that it's a bad thing. Just a sign that the fourth and final installment is very likely to take no prisoners and the lives of characters we have grown to love are at stake like never before.
*
Apollo is still stuck in the pimply, overweight body of Lester Papadopoulos, and has to track down another Oracle with the help of Meg McCaffrey, Grover Underwood and a motley crew of dryads and demigods. Lester undergoes some painful transformations in this story and he is all the better for the character building and the realisations that make him do and say things he couldn't ever have imagined, even in his former godly state.
*
We get new insight into some old characters, while the identity of the third emperor in the triumvirate reveals him to be the most terrifying of them all. It's going to take a lot to defeat the evil in The Tyrant's Tomb and I can't wait. What's a good adventure story without a twisted, sociopathic mastermind?

With Fall 2019 a while away, I might go back to The Lightning Thief and start over 😅

#grimdragon - landscapes
*
Not exactly a "landscape" but here's a hold that arrived earlier than expected against the backdrop of one of my favourite places in the city. I'm going to have to temporarily suspend my other reads and get going with this 👽😅

#grimdragon - I ship it

Simon and Blue are adorable. Do I need to say more? This is one of those rare books where the book and the film are equally enjoyable, and all characters are just precious in their own right.

17-year-old Alice and her mother Ella have been on the run since she can remember. Alice's estranged grandmother is the author of a collection of dark, twisted fairytales set in a world called the Hinterland - and the reclusive grandmother lives on an estate called the Hazel Wood. Bad luck seems to follow Alice and Ella wherever they go and when Ella disappears, apparently kidnapped by the Hinterland, all Alice has is her wits and classmate Ellery Finch, a superfan of her grandmother's work.
*
I was intrigued when the book started out and this kept me going for a while, until I wanted more and that more never came. Disclaimer at this point in the review - this is very much a polarising sort of book. Unlikeable lead, very slow narrative with not enough pay-off (for me), a fantasy world that we're never allowed to fully explore and hence care about, and plot points that were conveniently left to be explained until the end.
*
The writing's lovely in parts, so that was a plus, and I would have loved to be more immersed in the Hinterland, but it was hard to care about Alice whom I was initially sympathetic toward, but found nothing compelling about to root for after. Almost no redeeming qualities and the explanation about an important part of her comes too late to make amends. Also, being told that Ella means a lot to Alice and being shown flashbacks isn't the same as what more mother-daughter interaction could have established.
It was only in the last quarter of the book that things actually happened but by then I wasn't really bothered. It's not a good sign when well before the end just wanted it to be over, even if it meant all the characters died. That said, the author did a good job with the ending.
*
Definitely not my cup of tea, though the synopsis made me think otherwise. I've read that the author plans to release The Tales from the Hinterland and since I really enjoyed the two stories from that included in this book, I'll definitely be interested in reading that one.

#grimdragon - opening lines

This is how All the Light We Cannot See begins and I'm already in love with the prose and the sensitivity and the vivid descriptions of places and characters and their lives.

#grimdragon - series I need to finish

Well, this is more like a series the author needs to finish 😀 but what's another excuse to post about one of my favourite authors and series? 😉 And just look at this gorgeous cover 😍

I'm currently halfway through The Hazel Wood and quite enjoying it. I don't have any particular attachment to the characters yet, but it's dark and twisted and quite unexpected so far so that I can't quite figure out where it's headed.

I've put All the Light We Cannot See on a mini-pause since I don't want to be distracted when I'm reading it. But the rate at which I'm going, I'll be done with this one by tonight 😂

#grimdragon - genre I want to read more of

I definitely don't read as many memoirs as I would like to, especially ones by creative professionals. I have a fair few on my #unreadshelf that I'm hoping to get to eventually. This is one of them.
