Did you know CFS has a small office in Los Angeles? Well, it’s been raining, pouring non-stop this week and all this time, our teachers have been out in the streets, fighting for their rights and our kids’ education. We stand with teachers. Stay safe and stay dry, everyone. Who said it never rains in SoCal again... ☔️ Photo credit: People rally in the streets of downtown in the pouring rain during a United Teachers Los Angeles strike on January 14, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Teachers from the country's second-biggest school district have gone on strike after weeks of negotiations for more pay and smaller class sizes went nowhere. Oahu! Join us for a screening of our new four-part series, "Regenerating Paradise", at the HFUU Waiʻanae Chapterʻs monthly meeting on Monday, January 7th! 🔽🔽🔽 WHEN: Monday, January 7th 2019, 6:30pm WHERE: Kahumana Organic Farm & Cafe, 86-660 Lualualei Homestead Rd, Wai'anae, HI 96792 RSVP >> http://cfs.center/RPHFUU [link in bio] 🌱 🌱 The world’s soils are capable of storing excess carbon from the atmosphere, all we need to do is set the stage. Regenerative farming is an approach to food cultivation that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and resource conservation so that we can support ecosystem services while sustaining the productivity of the land. It builds resilience into the food system by strengthening the source of our nourishment: soil.
Showcasing local farms where soil health comes first, ”Regenerating Paradise” offers a hopeful look at the future of farming in Hawaiʻi.
6:30 PM: Pule – Blessing of food
6:45 PM: Announcements and open mic
7:15 PM: Hawai'i Center for Food Safety presents: “Regenerating Paradise” screening 7:45 PM: Kiana Laieikawai Frank, PhD – presentation on microorganisms. By studying and understanding environmental microbial communities, Kiana will share with us how we can better evaluate overall ecosystem health and inform current monitoring, restoration, cultivation, and management of Hawaiian ahupuaʻa resources to sustainably support our people and ʻāina.

BREAKING: Just days before Christmas, the USDA has released the long-awaited final regulations for the mandatory disclosure of foods produced using genetic engineering (GE or GMO), which it now calls "bioengineered foods." ▶️▶️Read more >> http://cfs.center/gelabelingregs 😱 The final regulations include provisions which will leave the majority of GMO derived foods unlabeled; discriminate against more than 100 million Americans; and prohibit the use of the widely known terms "GMO" and "GE." ### CFS is exploring all legal avenues to ensure meaningful labeling and protect the public's right to know. #gmo#gmod#ge#gelabeling#gmolabeling#righttoknow#darkact#bioengineered#usda#food#ag#biotech
CFS fights for organic standards AND organic farmers. Here's what Kathie Arnold, a long-time organic dairy farmer based in Truxton, NY, has to say about our work: "The current administration withdrew an essential new regulation that protects animal welfare on organic farms and requires organic poultry the space and outdoor access that you would expect. Thankfully, CFS stepped in to sue the USDA to force the agency to implement the new regulations to protect animal welfare and public health." 🐄 🐄 🐄 Donate today and help us continue fighting for organic integrity >> http://cfs.center/protectorganicintegrity [link in bio] #farming#food#organicfood#organicanimals#meat#dairy#olpp#cfs#centerforfoodsafety#newyork#kathiearnold#animalwelfare#organic
Tell EPA: No exceptions. No exemptions. #Factoryfarms shouldn't be exempt from reporting toxic emissions. Act now >> http://cfs.center/caforeportemissions [link in bio] 🐮 🐮 Factory farms, also known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), expel toxic emissions containing hazardous substances like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed exempting factory farms from reporting these emissions, keeping you in the dark about where and when toxic emissions occur. 🐄 🐄 Chronic exposure to toxic emissions from factory farms comes with serious health consequences like asthma or even asphyxiation. Individuals and local and state emergency responders need these emissions reports to address the health harms these toxic emissions cause for people living in the communities surrounding factory farms. #cafo#factoryfarms#environment#pollution#epcra#emissions#methane#climate#climatechange#actonclimate#epa
Tell Kellogg's to do the right thing and label GMOs on the PACKAGE! Add your name >> http://cfs.center/kelloggslabelgmos (link in bio) ✅✅✅ What is Kellogg's is hiding? The food giant proudly touts whenever its products do NOT contain GMO ingredients as “Non-GMO Project Verified.” It is only when they are required to reveal GMO ingredients in the products that they resort using QR code labels. So every time you want to find out if a Kellogg’s product was produced with GMOs or not, you will have to try and scan the QR code with your smartphone and then navigate the Kellogg’s site to find the information. 🤷♀️ Have you ever scanned QR codes to look up nutrition information? NOV 28: Hawaii, mark your calendars! Our mini-festival is coming to Honolulu. 🎥 RSVP >> http://cfs.center/fromthegroundup 🌱🌱 The global food system is particularly vulnerable to the weather extremes brought on by climate change. High-speed winds, heavy rainfall, and excessive flooding have the power to destroy crops, kill livestock, and erode farmland. But the relationship between society and nature is a two-way street. Our local food producers have the power to protect their resources and mitigate climate change, and it all begins in our soil. 🌎 The world’s soils are capable of storing excess carbon from the atmosphere, all we need to do is set the stage. Regenerative farming is an approach to food cultivation that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity and resource conservation so that we can support ecosystem services while sustaining the productivity of the land. It builds resilience into the food system by strengthening the source of our nourishment, soil. 🌱 Hawaiʻi Center for Food Safety’s latest short film series, "Regenerating Paradise," along with short films by Happen Films, Kiss The Ground @kisstheground , and Soil Health Institute, explains how taking care of our soil takes care of us! Join us on November 28th at 4 pm at UH Manoa in the Campus Center Ballroom for a fresh look at Earth’s most underrated resource, soil. We’ll be screening films that will help gain insight on the regenerative farming movement in Hawaiʻi, healthy soil practices, and carbon sequestration. THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
