Domino Park Life •
Dominoes is a Cuban passion & national pass time and is played with religious dedication all over the island. •
Groups of 4 play around shabby chic small tables, rum or coffee often to hand, and the intense concentration is liberally punctuated with discussions around the global political scene and the local neighbourhood gossip. Games can last hours or day as spectators drift in and out. The earliest reference to the game came from China where it was probably created around 1120 BC but it is firmly part of Cuban heritage now. •
The domino park in Little Havana in Miami is no different and it is the thriving heart of the district. Some tables are more boisterous than others, with the dominoes being slammed down in impassioned frustration while others are more focused in their solemnity. •
The styling is gangster cool; fedora hats cocked to Sinatra perfection & large gold jewellery & thick set shades seem de rigueur for both men and women. •

Built in 1926 this exquisite Art Deco cinema, The Tower Theatre, in Little Havana is magical in the golden hour. During the 1950’s & 1960 the films shown at this theatre were an introduction to American culture for thousands of Cuban exile families that made Miami their new home. •

Little Havana: Miami. •
The Cuban Revolution began in July 1953 lead by Fidel & Raúl Castro & later the iconic Che Guevara. The revolution continued sporadically until the rebels finally outed Batista in January 1959, replacing his government with a socialist state, that in 1965 became the Communist Party. •
In 1961 CIA backed Cuban exiles recruited from Miami attempted to retake the island in a disastrous invasion. Once the exiles landed on ‘The Bay of Pigs’ President Kennedy decided to withdraw the promised American air cover. They were out numbered & out gunned. The fiasco only strengthened Castro’s leadership & made him a national hero. •
Between 1959-1980 an estimated 500k Cubans left the island for the US, as both political & economic refugees. By 2010 a community of 1.9 million Cubans, had settled in the US, with 67% living in Florida. •
Many Cuban exiles made Miami their home and for the last 60 years Miami has been shaped by the fusion of cultures. Latin music pumps out from the clubs & bars as the city pulses to the rhythm of salsa. Little Havana is the best known neighbourhood for Cuban exiles in the world. It’s streets, namely Calle Oche, host all manner of Cuban heritage, from a Domino park, to cigar shops, salsa bars, iconic Cuban sandwich restaurants & famous murals. •
