Today is World AIDS Day.

As someone who is HIV-positive it is a day to remember how lucky I am to be alive. Taking one pill each day is all I have to do to keep myself healthy and undetectable- which means the virus is so diminished in my blood that it will not transmit.
The CDC has declared that - “Undetectedable Equals Untransmittable”
We have come such a long way but there is still much work to be done with regard to education. This year, in the fourth decade of this condition - when I told a client I was positive in casual conversation she asked if I had any cuts on my hands that I could “give it to her through” while coloring her hair - and after listing my HIV medicine, Triumeq, on a medical release form at a Las Vegas resort over the summer I was told I could only be massaged there if the technician wore gloves.
Stigma is alive and well and the only way to change that is for people like me to be open to the risk of facing ignorance and abuse from time to time when we talk about our health. I’m happy to do it- but some of the outrageous, ignorant reactions we get are why many people are still terrified to reveal their HIV positive status. To do so is poisonous.
Silence Equals Death.
I have a great team of gifted, brilliant, kind and non-judgmental doctors who keep me feeling great - my primary health concerns thankfully are those related to aging-and I am still as an independent small business person who is not on any kind of public assistance (other than a co-pay card) -able to afford my health insurance. However if there were no federal provision for pre-existing conditions in place I would have to pay over 3000 dollars a month for my medicine- which is more than our mortgage. It is something I worry about all the time - I make a good living but if I were to have to come up with that each month it would drastically change my life.
For now we should strive for Zero. Zero Stigma.
Zero Discrimination.
Zero HIV Infections.
Zero AIDS related deaths.
For those that care for us and about us -We love you we need you and we
Thank You
