Olive harvesting is in full swing in the Great Southern. These are Kalamata olives, picked and ready to be brined and added to our mixed olive tubs. .
As of the 1st of July 2018, Australian labelling will have changed. You will no longer need to read the fine print to find out where your food comes from. Under Consumer Law, all food sold into Australian stores will need to display the standardised labels showing where the food has been produced or made. If not completely made from Australian produce, they must state what percentage of the ingredients are Australian. Food from other countries will need to clearly state they are from that country.
We are proud to display "Produce of Australia" on all our bottles and tins meaning our olive oil is 100% grown, processed and packaged right here in OZ.
The Laika Stack!! Have you tried @laika.coffee yet? The former owners of Hylin West Leederville now have a funky new cafe in Lathlain. The cafe has its own roastery and even has a basket ball hoop out the back. This Laika Stack was absolutely delicious (almost licked the plate... almost!).
Follow Friday... Have you been to or heard of @mountstreetbreakfastbar ? Tucked away at the bottom of Mount Street (#42) in West Perth (just down the hill from Jacobs ladder and across the walk bridge from Spring Street). This little gem of a cafe not only does breakfast as the name suggests. They also stay open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Chef Fernando has created a gorgeous menu using local ingredients. Looking for a cosy romantic dinner spot or a great little cafe for a work meeting? This could just be the place. @mountstreetbreakfastbar .

Kitchen tip #10.
Want your Lemon olive oil cake to taste really lemony? Instead of just adding lemon zest, rub it in to the sugar before you start. Rubbing the zest helps release all of those yummy lemon oils in the rind. It works well with all citrus. So next time you are making a delicious lemon cake or slice, orange and poppyseed cake or mandarin pound cake... rub in your zest first for that extra burst of flavour.
Great Southern farming families.
My family has been involved in agriculture in the Great Southern region for generations. In the early 1920s, my great grandparents immigrated to Australia as part of Denmark's Group Settlement Scheme. Each family was given small farming plots off the Scotsdale Road out of Denmark to develop the land for dairy farming. Working to make any sort of living was very hard, many families were not experience in farming or used to such isolation. Looking back at photos such as these really puts into perspective how farming practices have changed in such a short time. .
