Photo by @FransLanting. There is a primeval appeal to gathering around a campfire under a Kalahari night sky with a Milky Way glowing overhead. The flames fuel friendships and the immensity of the space surrounding you draws everyone closer together. Nothing else matters except being there and sharing stories. I share this image in the spirit of Thanksgiving and send best wishes to all our friends around the world. Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPlikealocal
This weekend, the goal of #WHPlikealocal is to celebrate what you love about where you live.
Share hidden gems. What are the best and most beautiful spots in your city only a local would know? Let us in on the best-kept secrets.
Celebrate everyday scenes. Show us your daily activities that are unique to where you live — like rising early with animals on a farm or boarding a crowded city train at sunset.
Honor the legends. Is there a local baker who mixes up your all-time favorite treat? A muralist who gave your downtown’s walls a makeover? Make images of the people who love your town, and make it great a place to live.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPlikealocal hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Gratitude | Photograph by Eduardo Carrasco
“There is a love carried in the hearts of those that care for the sick and needy that is pure and selfless, and unlike any other,” writes Your Shot photographer Eduardo Carrasco. “This photo reveals the joy exhibited by the recipient of such love, as he basks in the tender touch of his nurses, soaking in the care and attention that was a highlight of his day.”

“Wonderful Eduardo… love is not just a couple holding hands or a pretty sunset or animals in cute cuddling; love is also giving love and kindness to others. Thank you, for taking [my] ‘I Love You’ assignment into the direction I was hoping for.” — @natgeo photographer John Stanmeyer (@johnstanmeyer)
This photo was also submitted to our “Quest for Happiness” assignment, curated by @natgeo photographer Matthieu Paley (@paleyphoto); he is asking you to photograph what makes a community happy — the ecosystem of happiness. To submit, go to the link in our profile. This assignment is inspired by the November 2017 National Geographic magazine cover story, “The Search for Happiness,” looking at some of the happiness places around the world, and what makes them so. #YourShotPhotographer

Rabbit Island is a remote 91 acre island, located just east of upper Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior.
The largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior is a 350 mile long, 3 quadrillion gallon of body of water that contains 10% of earth’s fresh surface water and is considered to be the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

Each summer @rabbitisland hosts artist residencies, and I shot this image while making a short film during a weeklong stay on the island. The day prior to this moment of glassy calm, we were pummeled with a fierce wind and rainstorm which resulted in being able to surf a point break wave that had never before been ridden!

The island has never been developed or subdivided, and a few years ago it was preserved by a conservation easement through the Keweenaw Land Trust, assuring it’s unique ecosystem will remain healthy in perpetuity.
