“Nevaeha Nelson, also known as Ya-Ya, poses for a portrait at Future Boxing Club in downtown Rochester, NY on November 18, 2014. The Future Boxing Club (@roc_future_boxing) is an after school program for the youth of Rochester and was designed to keep the children off the streets,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Jessica Plance. “I asked Ya-Ya, who is one of the only girls who boxes here to look at me like one of the guys had beat her in a fight. ‘The boys never beat me’, was how she responded.”

“Jessica not only illustrated the strength of this young woman through a single portrait, she demonstrated her expertise as a photojournalist by collecting personal quotes and backstory from her character. @natgeo Deputy Director of Photography Whitney Johnson writes, ‘I like the strength and directness of this portrait. I love that you have included the quote from Ya-Ya. It reinforces the quiet confidence that she exudes in the image.’” – @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // Inspired by the talented @vincentjmusi. For the past 4000 years, the northernmost people on the planet have been relying on their dogs to survive. The Greenlandic husky is a hardy breed made for hard work in some of the harshest corners of the Arctic. The lives of these dogs are not easy and they are not cuddly, but there is no question that the Inuit people know that without their dogs, the entire community would suffer. Teams of huskies pull the sleds that allow hunters to reach the edge of the sea ice, where they can hunt to supply meat for everyone, especially the dogs. It is without question, a relationship based on survival.
