Photo by @FransLanting I’m sharing this image of a Kakapo, one of the world’s rarest birds, in celebration of @NatGeo’s “Year of the Bird” campaign for 2018. When New Zealand broke away as a sliver of Gondwanaland many millions of years ago, it became an evolutionary raft of birds, which evolved there in wondrous ways. A parrot with Australian ancestors turned into a flightless vegetarian that roams the forest on foot after dark in search of seeds. Kakapos are the heaviest parrots in the world and they are nocturnal. They are highly endangered today and most of them now live on only three islands off New Zealand, where invading rats can’t get to them. One memorable rainy evening I caught up with a Kakapo. Actually it caught up with me. A curious female came to check me out as I was lying flat on my stomach on the muddy forest floor, camera in one hand, strobe in the other. Follow me @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom for more images from the world of birds. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #New Zealand #Kakapo #YearoftheBird #Endangered #Parrot #Birdphotography

The World at Night project
In a clear evening of southwest Switzerland, the New Moon is photographed above the historic Cathedral of Notre Dame in Lausanne. One of the values that led me to create The World at Night project ( over 10 years ago is universality of the night sky, above all symbols of our cultures and beliefs. This eternal roof brings us together as a single family of humanity in one home. on that evening the same new moon was appreciated by buddhists, moslems, jews, and all other 4200 public religions.

Ocean Feast | Photograph by Mathieu Simonet (@matsimonet)
#YourShotPhotographer Mathieu Simonet made this image of gannets feeding on sardines in the Indian Ocean. “[This] moment, far from the South African cost, was very impressive.”

“Wow. This must have been an amazing scene to witness; I love how wide you shot this image, revealing the number of birds in the area feeding on sardines. I love how some birds are circling above, other are diving, and more are feeding. There is wonderful energy to this frame. I can feel it. Well done Mathieu.” — @natgeoyourshot Producer David Y.
