Chemistry Laureate Richard Henderson had some advice for the students he met in Stockholm: “One of the most important things as a scientist is that you have to be an optimist,” he said. “If you’re a pessimist a failed experiment will tell you that this whole idea is bad and you’ll quit. Pessimists should work in insurance broking, where you only look for the downside!”

Image of Wilhelm Röntgen receiving his Nobel Prize for the discovery of X-rays at the first Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm, 1901. The Nobel Prizes have been presented to the Nobel Laureates at ceremonies on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, with only one exception. The 1919 Nobel Prizes were awarded on 2 June of the following year, in order to lend the festivities an atmosphere of early Swedish summer sunshine, light and greenery, instead of December’s darkness, chill and wet snow. This was not a success. No members of the Royal Family attended, due to the death of Crown Princess Margaretha. The weather was grey, rainy and cold. So, the next ceremony returned to the earlier traditional date of 10 December.
