@rogerballen has some new unseen work in the Dystopia/Utopia issue of @vice It was really humbling to WhatsApp him through the process of pulling this portfolio together. He’s been a hero of mine for a long time, since I was a bb photogrl. Get a copy at el Cortez tonight if you’re in bwick!
One of the first photo essays I knew I wanted to place in this issue was Sara Hylton's beautiful series on how Canada's Indigenous families grieve the loss of their loved ones. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police estimated between 1980 and 2012, around 1,200 Indigenous women were murdered or went missing. Sara photographed only women and documented them in their most emotional spaces: the places where they felt closest to their loved ones. What she found is a community of strong tradition and incredible resilience.
Shot some new stuff for this issue as well here’s one for our table of contents. So excited to share the rest this week.
The Dystopia and Utopia Issue is live today! It's the first issue in a couple months since the magazine has gone quarterly and made some changes. Every issue is now larger physically (photo issue size!) and page count, which means MORE PHOTOZ. Our tiny team worked hard on it and I'm really excited to announce that @tamarabdul Tamara Abdul Hadi has the cover story. For our issue she photographed the people of the Iraqi marshlands. Where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers meet, in what used to be the center of ancient Mesopotamia, is an area of wetland known as the Ahwar of southern Iraq. The locals glide down the waterways on handmade boats, and water buffalo move through the water. Thank you to her and all the other fantastic photographers commissioned for this issue. Y’all make my job easy with beautiful work.
