Repost from @studentsdemand: SHOUT OUT to @bh.sda students for dedicating themselves to the gun violence prevention movement—it’s no small task, thank you! ⠀ ⠀ Students Demand Action Berkeley High School, California was one of the first #StudentsDemandAction high school groups. It was started in 2016 by Maren Frye and Roni Weissman as a way to raise awareness about the American gun violence crisis. ⠀ ⠀ On March 14th, 2018, one month after the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, hundreds of Berkeley High School students walked out of their Wednesday morning classes to protest inaction on gun safety and honor the victims. @bh.sda, as well as several other BHS clubs like the Black Student Union, helped organize the walkout. The protest included 17 minute-long eulogies—one for each of the victims shot and killed—somber speeches, and empowering chants. ⠀ ⠀ The co-president, Roni Weissman, stated that the purpose of the walkout was to “show our solidarity with Parkland students, show we’re sharing in their pain with this tragedy and also want change to come out of it.” ⠀ ⠀ Several students stated that they were empowered to fight for gun violence prevention because they know people who’ve been directly affected by gun violence. One supporter, Hannah Goldberg, said to The Daily Californian, “I hope people in power see that we, as people affected by legislation, care and demand change.” After the walkout, BHS students registered students to vote so they can use their voices at the polls. ⠀ ⠀ In addition to the walk out, @bh.sda helped advocate for and pass a safe storage ordinance in the city of Berkeley. In the upcoming year, the students hope to grow their club and register more students to vote for the 2020 elections!⠀ ⠀ We are the future, and our voices matter! Text FUTURE to 644-33 to register to vote, and click the link in our bio to read more about Students Demand Action Berkeley! ⠀

Background checks work. In the last 25 years, background checks have blocked more than 3.5 million illegal gun sales from taking place. We need to update our laws to fit the times, and close the loopholes that allow people to buy guns without a background check. Text CHECKS to 644-33 to be connected to your senators and demand that they pass #BackgroundChecksNow.
