Fashion Takes Action

Words of wisdom especially at a time of year where “buying” more is common practice, and the perception of “giving” more is desired. Time to invest in our wardrobes, and slow down our gift giving. If you have a $100 limit for a gift, try buying 1 item 👚for that amount instead of 5 👚👕👖👔👗 We MUST reduce our fashion 👣👣!!!!!!!!!’

This month our 7 Rs of Fashion focus is on “RENT” because with the holidays comes holiday parties, and why buy a sequin or velvet gown when you can rent one at a fraction of the price? And there are even more casual options too for that office party. LBD perhaps? Check out @rentfrockrepeat for details! #rentthedress #rent #7rsoffashion #holidayparty #nyeoutfit #nye2019 #gala #xmas #lbd

Sometimes random acts of kindness happen to us and we’d just like to say a big thanks to Professor Mike Valente and his Masters of Management Business and Sustainability Class of 2018/2019 at @schulichschool for their generous donation! This will be put to good use as we can use it to subsidize our school program @myclothesmyworld #gratitude #donation #helpanonprofit #generosity #randomactofkindness

Imagine how great you’d feel wearing something made ethically, something you repaired, repurposed, rented, restyled, or recycled? When we proudly wear clothes that didn’t harm the planet or the people who made them, it makes us feel VERY good on the inside. Therefore ethical, sustainable, responsible fashion looks better! 👀👀 #consciousconsumer #7rsoffashion #reuse #rent #repair #restyle #repurpose #ethicalfashion #sustainablefashion

Thanks to everyone who came out last night to hear our panel discussion and SWAP their unwanted clothes. There were some really great items and everyone left with big smiles on their faces - maybe because they found an awesome piece or maybe because they just feel good knowing they are participating in the sharing economy 🙌🏻🙌🏻 either way last night was a great success! Thanks to @modelallianceny for inviting us to participate, to @forageandsustain @miss_albano @kotn @outlanddenim for being such great panellists, to our amazing volunteers and @thespokeclub for hosting! Dear Fast Fashion + Instagram Addict,
We have some questions for you:
When you wear something once, what happens to it after?
Did you know that the average person puts 80lbs of textiles in landfill each year?
If you can afford to buy daily disposable clothing, have you thought about instead investing in pieces you’d be proud to wear over and over?
Have you ever been to a clothing swap?
Are you aware that you can rent pieces and share your wardrobe with others?
Do you realize the positive statement you’d be making by wearing and being photographed in the same outfit twice? 5 times? 10?
Do you know you can get some help with styling your wardrobe so that even the same piece can look completely different?
Sincerely,
The Planet

“Reward Work, Not Wealth” report by @oxfaminternational examines the huge and growing chasm between the worlds rich and poor. .
.
Anju, one woman described in the report, makes just over $900 a year sewing clothes in Bangladesh. She often works 12 hour days and has to skip meals because she doesn’t have the money to eat. .
.
Meanwhile Amancio Ortega, founder of Inditex (parent company of Zara) earned $1.37 billion in 2016 and for a brief moment in 2015 he overtook Bill Gates as the worlds richest person. .

So what is waste anyway? And in what context are we calling our used clothes textile waste? Let’s look at the definitions. .
.
As a noun (and what we most commonly refer to our unwearables as) waste is: material that is not wanted; the unusable remains or byproducts of something
.
.
As an adjective: (of a material, substance, or byproduct) eliminated or discarded as no longer useful or required after the completion of a process
.
.
As a verb: use or expend carelessly, extravagantly, or to no purpose. .
.
So when used as a noun, textile waste just doesn’t seem appropriate. It often IS usable and IS wanted and it holds value.
As an adjective, “no longer useful or required” seems inaccurate as well.
As a verb it seems most appropriate when used to refer to our actions. We use and expend clothing carelessly, extravagantly and often to no purpose other than to buy more.
So the next time you hear the term “textile waste” start thinking about our actions, and not the actual product. Come to our clothing swap Dec 4 (🔗in bio). We simply can’t afford to “waste” any more time. 📸 @studio_mna #textilewaste #consumerbehaviour #climatechange #reduce #rethink #reuse #clothingswap
