So, my practice today included these mini explorations. I like to do this when time is a bit tight... but I basically play music on repeat for a short duration (two minutes or less...)... asking my impulses to quicken - usually these explorations are little more fiery...and carry some motifs. . Stopping points usually end at the same moment, second verse, first chorus, etc. As I repeat the song, I allow in creative repetition, as well as intentional variety. Each “round” is essentially a freestyle exploration, that builds off the previous spontaneous ideas. Sometimes a mini pattern is created in the midst, and its enjoyable to grow those ideas, too. This work is great for solo practice when you want external influences (from the present) but are alone! . You may use this to create combos and phrases, I like to keep it rich with freestyle but include a few “marker” movements that feel good that day, or are interesting to me. . A second, longer example, is over on my personal page @traceekafer. If you try it, or do this in your own way, comment and tag - please share! #findingyourfreestyle
Remember your process of exploring movement is for YOU. Your life needs the care, the space, the invitation to be what it is, where it is. Let the dance help you #DanceThrough. Thank you to @iris.sparrow for taking the time to create this beautiful piece that becomes a window for us to see it. #dancesaves . #Repost@iris.sparrow with @get_repost ・・・ There is always a contraction before a period of expansion, @traceekafer said to me the other day. And I've been holding that phrase so tight, worrying it like a smooth river rock in my palm ever since. phrase so tight, worrying it like a smooth river rock in my palm ever since.
1️⃣ First up is a full and closed event, my first THIRD year annual #FYFIntensive for the tribe at @drehmomentberlin - I love this work and we have an incredible time together. So grateful for the wonderful @2112alisa. .
2️⃣ Then, I stay over in Berlin to teach a special night of two hour workshops ... my two favorite things.... choreography and freestyle. Come experience two flavors of creating with me for a memorable Friday night! Tickets sold on my website, link in bio. .
3️⃣ Then, the very next day... I’ll be in Bielefeld at @exquisuite for the first time teaching three special workshops, one of which is ChairOgraphy! Chair Dance tends to be assumed inside one style, or in a box, but the chair is a place we experience SO much of our lives, and I love to open up to more of the narratives we tell in our movement with this “apparatus”. Expect interesting phrases and exercises that take chair movement out of the box. Also... FYF and #lowflow! . 4️⃣ Finally, the following weekend I’m headed to @leedspoledancestudio to spend time with someone I haven’t seen in years ... so excited to celebrate her studio and teach some of my favorite things. I’m honored to be one of their first guest instructors. Expect lots of photos here nerding out in GORGEOUS England with @carolinearundel. . 5️⃣ I’ll be in Edinburgh after Leeds and can be available for privates and consults ... send me a DM! .
My last (or close to last) session in my personal dance space before I head to Europe (check @traceekafer for dates and studios!). . This exploration was intended to use the joints and movement qualities to access intricate musicality. Also turned into use of balance work to play. .
I’ll be facilitating @findingyourfreestyle in Berlin, Bielefeld, and Leeds, UK this Sept, and Oct. I don’t head to Europe more often than once a year these days, so if I’m near you...I hope to entice you to come explore deeply with me! <3 - @traceekafer#findingyourfreestyle
Curious about the kind of transformations that happen at our Retreats? Here is one story. This work is everything to me, and I’m grateful to see how it infuses into other people’s lives. ❤️- @traceekafer . . "You know that feeling when you find either something or someone that you know will be impactful to your life? You feel the energy and the buzzing of something that you know is special. This is what it felt like for me meeting Tracee and discovering Finding Your Freestyle several years ago. This movement practice and theorem has not only been critical in developing personal movement style but eye opening and insightful in learning about what is going on inside the mind. And the best way to experience this work is in a long form retreat with Tracee and her expert team. .
I was fortunate enough to attend most of the Finding Your Freestyle retreats - my journey of growth and self-discovery could not have accelerated as much as it did within the past few years without these incredibly special retreats. To be gifted this space of openness, safety and collaboration to THINK, to MOVE and to FEEL is something that I think everyone should experience for themselves at some point. The retreats are so beautifully thoughtful in terms of the content that Tracee and her team curate - from movement theory, to creative expression, art, freestyle, self-care, meditation, intuition building, learning to listen deeper, finding your voice, each retreat has a special focus. You walk away from the retreat with gifts that keep on giving as the things you learn during the retreat keep cooking and show themselves to you as you go through the day to day tasks and challenges. . You also connect with beautiful humans during this retreat - so grateful to have danced, shared meals, laughs, cries and space with these woman as each and every single one of them has impacted my life so greatly. I can not say enough wonderful things about attending a retreat with Tracee and her team - it is transformative and the best way to experience real human connection & love." .
Here at @findingyourfreestyle, we’re big on the harmony between work and rest. Understanding fully the relationship to each other. Have you asked yourself lately, what am I feeding? How am I cultivating and nurturing the energy I need in order to feel present to the contributions I make to the world every day with my finite resources? Am I aware of how I give, and how I receive in the wheel? A little wisdom from #FYFtribe team member below - @kielejael.... #Repost@kielejael with @get_repost ・・・ There is nothing more rejuvenating for the mind, body, and soul than REST. ▪️ But unfortunately, most of us don’t allow ourselves to do exactly that. And why not? ▪️ We live in a society that highly values productivity, activity, and accomplishment. Which is both positive and negative. ▪️ In Eastern medicine, it is known that all things can be divided into yin and yang: Light & dark, good & bad, active & inactive, cold & hot, movement & rest. And one cannot exist without the other. You need rest for activity. ▪️ For a lot of women I know, work and work ethic make up a large part of their identity and self esteem. It defines who they are. It’s a good thing to always be on the go and in activity. But what happens if they lose their job, their career, what are you left with? what happens if they are forced to shift that, and examine themselves in rest mode? ▪️ I truly believe it’s important to take a step back, take breaks from the go-go-go activity of every day life, in order to rejuvenate yourselves to keep on going. It’s highly important to sometimes...DO NOTHING. This is very different from being lazy. This is about the ability to GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO CHILL SO YOU CAN PRODUCE. ▪️ So don’t forget to give yourself a break. Take time to be by yourself, surround yourself with peace, inactivity, and silencing your mind. Try meditating, journaling, or breathe work. It will help create the energy for the activity you need to be productive, focused, and healthy. ▪️ 📷@theadamchin
We’re seeing lovely words and reflections about the recent Retreat, we will share some more soon. ❤️ . #Repost@ladymellifera with @get_repost ・・・ The re-entry into the real world has been hard, but I refuse to lose this feeling. Allowing oneself to be so receptive and open to emotion is a hard pill to swallow went exploring the big city. I'll never lose this feeling, I know it's there. Deep rooted within myself. Finding your free was never about the physical location on where we dance, but the journey we let out hearts take. The connections, the emotions, the feels...they will always live on. 🧡🧡🧡🍑🧡🧡🧡 ••• #fyfretreat@findingyourfreestyle #polesisters#findingyourfreestyle#ladymellifera 📸@cecidebucourt_photography
