Clearly, the natural world is at the losing end of this exploitative system. At the same time, this system has resulted in unprecedented social inequalities, exemplified by these statistics. 🚨 We know that CLIMATE CHANGE IS ONLY EXPECTED TO EXACERBATE THESE INEQUALITIES - disproportionately affecting youth, poor countries, women, Indigenous Peoples, and communities of color. So, while the ‘winners’ of this system are the biggest source of the climate crisis, the ‘losers,’ who are already marginalized by the system, will bear it’s greatest consequences. Again, this is why climate change must be understood as a SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUE. 🚨

“All the things we need to do to stop climate change are also the things we need to do to build a just, healthy, prosperous society right now. Climate action like a Green New Deal would seriously improve most of our lives—including my own. Only a wealthy few profit off delay and inaction, whereas many, many, many of the rest of us would benefit materially from the radical transformations of our way of life that the climate crisis demands.”

There are always multiple ways to explain social issues, which are often closely related to systems of power. As the famous saying goes, “history is told by the winners.” In other words, those who hold power shape our understandings of things in ways that allow them hold on to their power. 💸
.
As we’ve explored, the dominant narrative around climate change defines climate change as an environmental crisis, ignoring the underlying socioeconomic system that has created this crisis. It tends to highlight the potential of ‘economic development’ to create new solutions to climate change, suggesting that if we keep doing what we’re doing, maybe a solution will eventually emerge. This implicitly suggests that we can fix things without changing the system. ❌
.
Moreover, by focussing on the technical aspect of climate change, the narrative frames the crisis as something outside of the control of everyday people - politicians, experts, and corporate lobbyists have the power, and the rest of us don’t. In this way, the narrative limits people’s perceptions of possibilities for social change; while the normalizing and upholding existing power dynamics, making them appear unalterable. ❌
.
Because people tend to legitimate what they perceive to be inevitable, this narrative  works to maintain the legitimacy of the status quo - Neoliberal Capitalism. Thus, systemic reform is hindered, the status-quo is maintained, and meaningful climate action continues to lag behind.🚨 .

“Because the link between happiness and consumerism has been so powerfully woven into our culture, the idea of ‘cutting back’ is usually seen as grim or threatening. Yet the real losses come from consumerism. Bit by bit, we are losing our world. We are losing the forests, the fish, the bees; we are wiping out whole species. We are losing the richness of community and much of what makes life meaningful. We are now on the brink of losing the biological support systems we need to survive. .

We know that averting climatic catastrophe will require governments to put huge checks on corporations, and make large-scale interventions in the economy, to facilitate the transition to a sustainable future. Capitalist ideology tells us to do the exact opposite. 🙄
.
.
Capitalism says that economic markets, rather than governments, should rule. This has meant that companies with huge amounts of lobbying power have ensured that governments leave their extractive activity almost completely unregulated. So, huge corporations continue to exploit our resources and pollute our planet, while actively preventing policy that could end this destruction. 🚨 🚨 🚨 .
.
Clearly then, capitalism is a huge part of the problem. So, it simply does not make sense to recycle the problem as the solution. As Albert Einstein reminds us, “We can’t solve problems with the same thinking that was used to create them.”

“Slavery wasn’t a crisis for British and American elites until abolitionism turned it into one. Racial discrimination wasn’t a crisis until the civil rights movement turned it into one. Sex discrimination wasn’t a crisis until feminism turned it into one. Apartheid wasn’t a crisis until the anti-apartheid movement turned it into one. In the very same way, if enough of us stop looking away and decide that climate change is a crisis worthy of Marshall Plan levels of response, then it will become one, and the political class will have to respond, both by making resources available and by bending the free market rules that have proven so pliable when elite interests are in peril.” ― Naomi Klein, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate .

As noted, the fundamental aim of capitalism is maximizing individual profits. Under law, corporations #1 goal is to make as much money as possible, and the way that they do that is by pushing the ‘externalities’ (social and environmental costs) of their profit-seeking onto others. It’s worthy to take a minute to note some of the biggest ‘externalities’ of this system.😞 .
.
Firstly, capitalism has resulted in unprecedented economic inequality, with ALMOST HALF of the world’s money concentrated in the 1% wealthiest people, while over nearly half of the global population lives in extreme poverty, without their basic needs met. Climate change is only expected to worsen these inequalities, harming the world’s poorest regions (who have contributed virtually nothing to climate change) first, and worst. Moreover, the tiny fraction of people making huge profits off this system are actually the biggest contributors to environmental degradation, with just 100 of the biggest corporations responsible for over 70% of carbon emissions worldwide. Yes you read that right. 😤😤😤

Most carbon emissions are the by-product of the mass-consumption and energy-intensive lifestyles that are encouraged by our global economic system: capitalism. Under this system, ‘progress’ is measured as economic growth (i.e. getting richer), and the only way to ‘progress’ is for more people to consume more things, which capitalist ideology tells us is good for us. However, more production means more exploitation of our quickly dwindling resources, and more consumption means more emissions & more global warming🚨 .
.
Also worth noting is that increased consumption has NOT met with a corresponding increase in psychological well-being, but has actually been linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression. In reality then, contrary to what capitalist culture has ingrained into our ways-of-thinking, it is in our best interest to consume LESS, not more. If we continue to exploit our natural resources, our economic system is BOUND TO COLLAPSE. So, the carbon emissions themselves are not so much the PROBLEM, but are a SYMPTOM of problematic economic system. .

“As my intellectual and spiritual hero @charles_eisenstein has taught me, everything is connected. I think that we all have a sense that our ecological, political, psychological, and sociological climates are connected, in ways that are difficult to pinpoint or measure. It is no coincidence that we are simultaneously facing political polarization, widening social inequalities, unprecedented levels of depression and anxiety, and ecological collapse. As Charles highlights, everything is relational. “The world is part of me, and I am a part of it.. What happens to the world is in some ways happening to me.. And what we do to others, we do to ourselves.” 💭💭💭
.
Recognizing the complex interrelations of systemic issues makes it clear that there are no fix-all solutions to problems we face. Now that we’ve covered the basics, we’ll begin exploring climate change through the lens of ‘systems thinking.’ This perspective can help us understand the structure of our world as an overarching system, made of many sub-systems - including ecological systems, economic systems, political systems, psychological systems, and others - which are interconnected in complex ways. Most of today’s discourse on climate change focuses on carbon emissions, while ignoring the underlying systems that explain the carbon crisis we are facing. 🌏
.
Going deeper, we know that carbon emissions don’t come out of nowhere: they are the result of human activity, which is primarily driven by the socioeconomic system that we have designed - Neoliberal Capitalism. Since the end of the Cold War, capitalist ideology has spread across the world, becoming the ‘norm’, and shaping economics, politics, culture, and our ways of thinking. The ultimate goal of capitalism is making money, and it’s ideology advocates for things like individualism, consumerism, privatization, and deregulation, which underpin a lot of the root issues that explain the phenomenon of climate change. The following portion of our starterpack will explore this paradigm, using a ‘systems’ lens.

Before we dive into the “systemic” section of our #sustainabilitystarterpack, we want to acknowledge that this stuff can be extremely difficult to talk about. While politicians tend to tip-toe around the controversial topic of the “changing the system,” we know that meaningfully moving forward will require us to have some very difficult conversations about things like capitalism, inequality, oppression, and white privilege. We know that these conversations can be tricky to navigate, so along with some of our #forlifefriends, we’ve gathered some tips on engaging in productive and respectful conversations about systemic change, which will be guiding the way that we approach our communication.

As noted earlier, this year’s groundbreaking IPCC report told us that we have just 12 (now 11) years to avoid crossing the climactic point-of-no-return. This is because it takes a while for emissions to build up in the atmosphere and start causing consequences. In other words, the effects of global warming that we are seeing today are the result of emissions from previous decades; and the emissions that we produce today will determine the magnitude of the consequences we will feel in the years to come. So, what we do (or do not do) today, essentially ‘locks in’ the future of our atmosphere. Currently projections show that we have about a 5% chance of meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement (i.e. habitable life), so if we want to change the trajectory of our future, we have to start making BIG changes NOW‼️
.
While technically, it’s still GEOPHYSICALLY POSSIBLE to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, under today’s paradigm, it’s POLITICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. This is why averting the climate crisis will take massive SYSTEMIC changes in law, economics, and social norms. The next portion of our #sustainabilitystarterpack will uncover what these changes must entail. .

Under the Paris Agreement, each country makes VOLUNTARY (i.e. not legally binding) plans on how they are going to implement the Paris Goals (of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius) within their national climate policies. However, EVEN IF all current national plans are implemented in totality (which historically, they never have been), we still won’t be anywhere close to reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement. In fact, emission-reduction plans would have to be increased by a FIVEFOLD to reach the goals of habitable life. ⚠️
.
Shockingly, even after the IPCC’s ‘12 year warning’ report was released, global climate plans have remained grossly insufficient, and the IPCC’s recommendations (which are  supposed to direct climate policy within the UN) have not been incorporated into the Paris Agreement. This is due to the fact that a few extremely powerful oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran and the USA have deliberately blocked the report’s findings from being incorporated into the international climate treaty. 👿

Ever wondered what scientists meant when they told us that we have 12 years left to stop climate change? Basically, once we hit 2 degrees of warming (above pre-industrial temperatures), we risk entering the hothouse state, or triggering ‘catastrophic climate change’. So, the Paris Agreement - the largest international climate treaty - aims to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. This would require reducing global emissions 50% by 2030, then reducing them by 50% AGAIN by 2040, then reducing them by 50% AGAIN by 2050. Despite all of this, GLOBAL EMISSIONS ARE STILL ON THE RISE, and we’re set to cross the catastrophic climactic ‘tipping point’ by 2030. Once we cross this point, we will no longer be able to un-do our mistakes. 🚨🚨🚨
.
Importantly, the groundbreaking ‘12 year warning’ report, released by the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - or, the largest coalition of cliamte scientists in the world) -  tells us that the difference between 1.5 and 2 degrees of warming is MASSIVE; the consequences look almost exponentially worse with just an 0.5 extra degrees of warming. So, every little bit of warming matters, every year matters, and every choice matters. For now, we are free to make choices, but we will NOT be free from the consequences of these choices. 😔

🚨 Based on current emission trends, we’re heading towards a ‘hothouse state’ where climate change becomes UNSTOPPABLE, and IRREVERSIBLE. Once we enter this stage of ‘catastrophic climate change’ the earth will lose its ability to regulate the carbon cycle, meaning that any efforts to reduce the effects of emissions will have ZERO effect. The ice sheets will melt, seas will rise 10-60 meters, and many parts of the world will become uninhabitable. 🚨 .

Global atmospheric CO2 levels have hit record highs: atmospheric carbon is now more concentrated than it has been in over 3 million years, and "carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now increasing 100 times faster than at the end of the last ice age due to population growth, intensive agriculture, deforestation and industrialization." Based on current trends, carbon levels will soon exceed levels that are compatible with human survival. 🌎
.
Unfortunately, it’s not just human survival at risk. a recent UN report finsd that around 1 million animal and plant species (1/8 species on Earth) are now at risk of extinction due to human activity. Terrifyingly, the 6th mass-extinction event - known as the ‘Holocene Extinction’ - is already underway. 🌎
.
This sheds light on an important point often missed in climate discourse: the crisis we’re facing is not only about carbon emissions, it’s about the fact that our planet is literally dying. Earth itself is a living, self regulating ecosystem - which has been named ‘Gaia.’ Similar to a human body, when one organ stops working, the whole system is at risk of collapse. So, the carbon crisis is not the central problem, but is a symptom of the fact that Earth’s entire ecosystem is dying, and loosing it’s capacity to regulate it’s internal cycles, which support life. 🌏

While climate change is often talked about as an environmental issue, it must also be understood as a SOCIAL JUSTICE issue. Climate change is deeply connected to almost all social issues on Earth, for it is expected to exacerbate existing social inequalities: disproportionately affecting the world’s most marginalized populations, including women, the poor, Indigenous Peoples, and communities of color. So, if you care about social issues, you also need to care about climate change!

Climate change refers to the human-induced warming of the Earth’s climate (long-term weather patterns) that results from burning fossil fuels, which emit greenhouse gasses (GHGs). These GHGs trap heat into the atmosphere, causing ‘global warming’. Warmer temperatures contribute to melting glaciers and rising seas, as well as increasing the risk of deadly heat waves, droughts, floods, and storms.

Hey friends! Before we get started with our #sustainabilitystarterpack, we wanted to note that we intend for this campaign, and our page in general, to be an INCLUSIVE and PARTICIPATORY place! We hope to create a safe space for productive learning, growing, and community-building, and want ALL voices to feel welcome to share their questions, perspectives and input in our comments section 🤗
.
As well, we know that a lot of the information about the climate crisis (which we’re about to share) can be really tough to digest, mentally and emotionally. We encourage you to bear with us as we get through the distressing exploration of the issue, and know that it will be followed by uplifting solutions-based content, as well as resources on coping with eco-anxiety. Worry not - we will be here to support you through your entire journey of becoming a sustainability superstar 🌟 Feel free to reach out to us at any time - we’re all in this together! 💕💕💕
