Where the Streets Have No Names | Photograph by Maria Sahai

“Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost settlement in the world, is one of my favourite places to explore. Especially during the Polar Night, when the sun doesn’t rise for months,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Maria Sahai. “The streets in Longyearbyen have no names, which makes it even more interesting to wander them in search of small details and simple moments.”

“The dark blue tones give this image a cool feeling which matches the frozen landscape that we see. I love that you took this image wide and included the streetlights in the photo. Nice work.” — @natgeoyourshot Producer Matt Adams (@themattadams). This image was selected for the January 8, 2018 Daily Dozen.

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // How do you like to travel? In the Amazon, where I photographed this sunset along the shores of the mighty Xingú River, people carve canoes with fire and ax from the trunks of massive trees. In the absence of roads, most travel is done on the river. When the canoes are not being used, they half-sink them to prevent air from rotting the wood. Sanjida Sahajahan, 11, was a healthy toddler when the common bacterium pneumococcus devastated her brain. When I met her last year, she couldn’t talk, couldn't walk and couldn’t eat alone. She wasn’t vaccinated for pneumonia because developing countries didn’t have the PCV vaccine when she was a kid. It is only in 2015 that Bangladesh started to use the PCV vaccines. This picture was published as part of the story « Why vaccines matter » in the Novembre issue of tte magazine.
