Born on this day the French avant-garde artist Francis Picabia. In 1915 Picabia abandoned his exploration of abstract form and color to adopt a new machinist idiom that he used until about 1923. Unlike Robert Delaunay or Fernand Léger, who saw the machine as an emblem of a new age, he was attracted to machine shapes for their intrinsic visual and functional qualities. From our collection his "Very Rare Picture on Earth", 1915. In this work a self-generating, almost symmetrical machine is presented frontally, clearly silhouetted against a flat, impassive background, and might be read as the evocation of a sexual event in mechanical terms. #FrancisPicabia #PeggyGuggenheimCollection

“The main thing in making art often is letting go of your expectation and your idea”. Born on this day the American Minimalist artist Agnes Martin. Her works—distinguished by their square format, grids, lines drawn on canvas, and monochromatic color with subtle variations in hue-convey her emotional response to nature and transmits the experience of beauty and lightness. Inspiring contemplation, even meditation, Martin hints at spirituality as inherent in nature, and alludes to a transcendent reality. From our collection (Schulhof Collection) her "'Rosa (Rose)', 1966. #AgnesMartin #PeggyGuggenheimCollection

Born on this day the Italian artist Mario Merz. From our collection his neon "Se la forma scompare la sua radice è eterna" [If the Form Vanishes Its Root Is Eternal], 1982. For Merz neon represented the light of human intelligence, the power of thought, and the inspirational force of ideas. The merging of the signifying medium (neon/thought) and of the spelt out words (title/idea/meaning) into an art object gives this work its peculiar economy, resonance, and, so to speak legibility. #MarioMerz #PeggyGuggenheimCollection
