Video by @joelsartore | The Northern Bald Ibis is a critically endangered species that is highly social and congregates in large flocks. At one time two separate populations existed-- a non-migratory Northern African/European population and a migratory Middle-eastern population. It has been of special focus of both European Zoos and US Zoos to keep a healthy captive population with the intent of preserving the species. Many cultural myths are associated with this species and some scholars believe this species was the representative of the Ancient Egyptian God of Knowledge, Thoth.
With the conflicts in Syria and other portions of the Middle East, that migratory population has been under extreme pressure and was feared to have been lost. However, recent sightings have confirmed that a few birds still remain. The good news is that it’s been confirmed that the Northern African population has been growing and is starting to form satellite colonies. The @HoustonZoo, where this bird was photographed, supports this species by being an active member of the SSP (species Survival Plan) and, along with the other Zoos in this program, works to safeguard the species for future generations.

Traffic Jam | Photograph by Zhayynn James (@zhayynn_james_photography)
“While on safari in Ndutu, we had heard about a pride of tree-climbing lions. When we found them, they had just been chased off by a herd of elephants and retreated to a low, spreading tree. The tree-climbing lions of Masek were putting on a show!,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Zhayynn James. “I captured this image after all but a couple of lions had climbed the tree, with a big lioness leading the way. The sub-adults followed, single file, resulting in a comical one-way traffic jam that had them all flummoxed as to how to descend.”

Starting today, we’re introducing new ways for you to stay connected to your interests on Instagram, with the ability to follow hashtags like #equestrian.
For 19-year-old Menea Johansson Djärv (@nornea), dressing up means felt hats, capes and a unicorn horn for her beloved pony Norina 🦄. As a child growing up in Sweden, she was inspired by vivid fairy tales and medieval markets. “It was beyond exciting to see adults dress up and pretend they lived in a different time,” she says. Now, cloaked in nature, Menea creates her own #equestrian daydreams that reflect a real-life kinship with her creatures. “I want [my horses] to see me as a best friend they can trust and respect, just like I do with them. Most photo shoots are spontaneous. The most challenging part is to focus on the horses and the camera at the same time. The most fun part is to feel adventurous and invincible.”
