Sometimes it looks almost unreal; like someone poured liquid gold in the water. The picture is from Northern Norway where killer whales come close to the shore during winter. The sun stays below the horizon this far north but there is still light and colors. #wintertime #orca #norway #liquidgold #motherandcalf #ocean #nature @larsoivindknutsen @stephenjdevincent @goranehlme @paulnicklen @cristinamittermeier @christinanoer @frederikwolffteglhus @andersdrud @washington_inc

A male killer whale approaching our boat. The fin, like the keel on a boat, is an important hydrodynamic element, stabilizing the animal especially when it is fast moving. And killer whales move fast! With a top speed around 40 km/hour they are among the fastest animals in the oceans. #killerwhale #orca #norway #speed #nature #ocean

It’s this time of year.....met this beautiful all white reindeer on a recent trip in Norway. She was scraping the surface trying to find some food under the snow.

Four big males, maybe brothers; certainly closely related. For hours they kept swimming back and forth in the little bay surrounded by tall mountains as the sun slowly went from the low light at dawn to the low light at dusk. In the Arctic winter it is a process that only takes a few hours and on calm and clear days it adds almost vulgar colors to the landscape. #dawnpatrol #orca #killerwhale #northernnorway #arcticwinter #brothers #sunsetatsea #naturephotography

In most places of the World killer whales are feared by other whales. Even the big baleen whales flee when the killer whales come too close. In Norway the humpback whales and the killer whales swim and forage peacefully next to each other; if anything the killer whales are the ones that are "bullied" by the much larger species. The unusual situation is probably caused by an abundance of food; herring in huge amounts come close to the shores in autumn and winter. The humpback whale here is oblivious to the presence of killer whales. #killerwhale #humpbackwhales #norway #nature #orca #wintertime #arctic #loveofnature

Imagine to have so lovely red feet! And to be able to bend down and touch them like this. I know I would if I could! Antarctic shag doing some bird yoga. #antarctica #birdlife #shag #birdyoga #nature #antarctica #ocean #nature #birdlovers #birdlife

It's been a beautiful day, walking with Naimo along the beach in the wind. Naimo think we should have continued much longer! #happinessisawarmpuppy #bordercollielove #nothingbeatsnature

Killer whales in the low arctic light. Soon they will start to move towards the coasts of Norway for the annual herring feast. Despite their name most if the Norwegian killer whales eat only fish (which of course they kill), but not other marine mammals.

Even a humpback whale looks small in the big ocean. #humpback #ocean #northernnorway #winteriscomming #goingaway #ilovenature

Difficult to hide when you have an almost two meter tall back fin. Male killer whale in very calm sea. #orca #killerwhale #likeamirror #ocean #northernnorway #nature

Filming killer whales underwater makes your blood run faster! @paulnicklen and @goranehlme had a close encounter with a big male snapping herring just a meter away from them. What a priviledge it is to work with so skilled and comitted experts and to share their joy. Thank you for an unforgettable experience! #killerwhale #orca #joyoflife #ocean #norway #nature #underwater #filming @larsoivindknutsen @frederikwolffteglhus #paulnicklen

The day I took this picture the killer whales were spyhopping all the times. The previous days they had mainly been feeding and had been too busy to do much else. Something changed that made them alter the behavior (I have no clue what). On thid day they were either resting calmly at the surface, fooling and playing around or busy studying the environment above the water; including us. Those small moments of eye contact and reciprocal curiosity are precious. #orca #northernnorway #killerwhale #spyhop #preciousmoments #nature #ocean #conservation
