I don’t even know how to start. It’s my second Emily Henry book and like the first, this blew me away. I love love love the characters in this book. I love June, I love Saul, I love Jack III and I love Hannah. It’s magical realism and straight up awesome female friendship done riiiight, I tell ya. I love Hannah and June’s friendship the most. Hannah’s like this tiny speck of light and she’s just so adorable and I just wanna cry from pure bliss because she’s amazing and she deserves all the good things in life. ⠀

I guess what I want to say is: read this. You’re welcome.

OHMYGOSH that was painful to read! This book is filled with all YA trope imaginable and the slut-shaming is too unbearable. A good premise, too much potential but all wasted!!!

Seriously, what the F did I just read? This is the dumbest, most terrible book I’ve read (on the same level as This Is Where The World Ends). And even then, Audrey is still the worst protagonist ever. She spread a lie for no apparent reason that drove a friend to her death, cheated on her boyfriend, acted like the selfish, entitled and ungrateful brat that she is, cussed at her mom (!) and had the audacity to get on with dead friend’s boyfriend. WHAT. THE. FREAKING. HELL. Is this what we should be writing about and teaching kids these days? ⠀

This goes to say that Lang Leav is not one of my fave authors. I read one of her “poetry” and I will say this again — hers is a terrible imitation of it. But I still gave this novel a chance which in hindsight was a huge mistake, thinking that this somehow might redeem my opinion of her. ⠀

And what finally set the bomb for me was this:⠀
“I learned that writing is the consolation prize you get when you don’t get the thing you want the most.”⠀

How. Dare. You. ⠀

So yeah, I hate this book with a burning passion.

Oh gosh, that was beautiful. My mind is still reeling with golden thoughts about this book. It’s not on par with Aristotle and Dante but it’s beautiful in its own way.
BRB *crying*

Hello, I Love You is about a young American woman, Grace, who travels to Korea to escape some shit back home. I can’t believe how appalled I am by her cultural insensitivity and constant putdowns of the Korean culture. She was painted to be a flawed character and we all need that especially in YA but her cultural ignorance throughout the book with a huge heap of being judgmental did not make her endearing at all. No one even forced her to go to Korea, it was her freaking choice and yet she was dismissive of anything that was unfamiliar to her and unwilling to embrace a culture she chose for herself. Case in point:⠀

“𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦? 𝘐 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯, 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘱-𝘩𝘰𝘱 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘬? 𝘖𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘧𝘧?”⠀

𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘯𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘰𝘯 𝘙𝘌𝘈𝘋𝘠 𝘛𝘖 𝘞𝘏𝘌𝘙𝘌 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘻𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦.⠀

“𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺?” 𝘐 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘑𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯, 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴. “𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵.”⠀

“𝘐𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵.” 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦. “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”⠀

“𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘴? 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺?”⠀

This is not a book that represented diversity well. This is not a book for KPop lovers. This is a huge MOCKERY to the Korean culture, it’s appalling. And the only reason this is getting a two-star from me is because of the side characters.
