I was never fortunate enough to live in the same town as my grandparents growing up. We moved quite a few times throughout my childhood and we lived anywhere from 20 mins to 20 hours from them. It didn't stop us from being close though. We would write and call each other often, long before the days of FaceTime or cell phones for that matter. They both retired very early (52 & 56), so they would come visit often and for weeks at a time! But when I was 26, as they were getting older, they moved to where my family had settled, so we could be closer and care for them. My grandfather would always say, "It's a magical time" with such a grin on his face! And it was!! My husband and I would bike in the evenings over to their new house. We would stop in just to say hello and talk about our day before continuing our bike ride back home to make dinner. It was amazing to be so close and see each other so easily! My grandfather left us 7 years ago today, but I will forever remember that magical time.
