Afe Alexis is a resident at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is specializing in internal medicine, and recently spent a few weeks at Hopital Bernard Mevs. We love when the experience is always positive! When we asked her what surprised her the most about Haiti, she shared with us that, "There were two things that were most striking to me: the first was how supportive the family members of the hospitalized patients were; never leaving, even sleeping at the hospital just in case their relatives needed them overnight. I haven't seen that level of commitment to family in the other areas that I have practiced." "The second observation was how caring the staff were to the patients. It reminded me of a loving family rather than a hospital setting." Her advice to potential volunteers: "Go for it! The most challenging part for me was going to a new place and not knowing what to expect. However, from the moment I landed in Haiti, I knew I had made the right choice. Everyone was so warm and welcoming and I never regretted my decision. Words are not sufficient to describe the experience, you must see for yourself." #nationalvolunteerweek2019#projectmedisharehaiti#hopitalbernardmevs#Haiti

Drs. Rony Dolne and Claudia Joseph have both been working at Hopital Bernard Mevs for the past three years. Thanks to our volunteer program, and partnership with the hospital, the two Internal Medicine specialists have been able to work alongside doctors from the United States and Canada. They shared with us that they think the partnership, "...is a wonderful program that we have learned a lot from. It's a great learning experience for all involved." Few places in Haiti offer intensive care, and they are proud to be working in one of Haiti's best facilities. Both doctor expressed interest in continuing to improve their skills with the mechanic ventilator. Interested in volunteering? We, at Bernard Mevs Hospital would like to recognize and thank our staff for all their hard work during this latest crisis we all had to endure. Our team always gives their all when taking care of patients, but extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. From housekeeping, drivers and ancillary services to nursing staff and doctors, our staff have worked over their usual hours, and risked their safety to reach the hospital and serve for their country. Many left their families to stay at the hospital and worked 24 to 36 hour shifts to provide the best possible care to all. We are so proud of our team and continue to be there for our brothers and sisters of Haiti. #dedication#aboveandbeyond#OneTeam#hospitalbernardmevs
There is no greater joy than the joy we give to others. This little one was born yesterday... and despite this chaos we were able to welcome him into to this world. You have managed to put a smile on the face of not just one person but many people at the hospital. You brought us light in a time of darkness and for that we could not be more grateful🙏🏻❤️#hopitalbernardmevs#themissioncontinues#oneteam#weneedpeaceinthisworld#gratefulforstaff

Yoline is a healthy, thriving young girl who recently celebrated her 1st birthday by starting to stand up on her own. But her life was not always so promising. Born with a large cervical mass, and abandoned by her family shortly after birth, her future looked grim. She was referred to Hospital Bernard Mevs in order to remove the mass that was affecting her life.
Yoline's mass was discovered to be a cervical teratoma, a rare, large tumor in the cervical region of her neck, affecting her airway and her breathing. She desperately needed a higher level of care than the hospital she was at could give her. Luckily, the team of highly trained surgeons were able to remove the benign tumor. Once she recovered from the surgery, IBESR placed her in the crèche at Three Angels Haiti, where she is receiving loving care as she waits to be adopted by her forever family. Thanks to your continued support, our doctors can continue to perform life-changing surgeries, even for these precious little ones who have no means to repay us. Their beautiful smiles are enough. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you are capable of helping in any way. Thank you in advance❤️#hopitalbernardmevs#healthcareinhaiti#medicalneedsinhaiti#themissioncontinues#one team @threeangelshaiti
Team Broken Earth once again joined HBM for another amazing week of helping the people of Haiti. This team of 20 from Ottawa, not only included surgeons, anesthesia, and OR nurses who spent countless hours in the operating room performing Orthopedic and cleft lip surgeries, they also brought pediatric nurses, emergency room doctors and nurses and physical and occupational therapists. This team working along side the HBM staff truly made a difference in every patient they saw. We are grateful for such wonderful partnerships. @teambrokenearth#hopitalbernardmevs#healthcareinhaiti#oneteam
