HERE’S FOUR, THERE ARE MORE! Standing poses are used to cultivate space and stability. Generally, when focusing on stability, we use the “hard” props like bricks, walls or a chair. Certainly for beginners this is a good option. However, once a practitioner has explored with some depth this way of working it is truly interesting to take the standings on a softer surface and observe the challenges to proprioception and balance. The poses with head support really encourage us to soften the organs of perception (janendriyas) which a primarily in the face, while keeping the organs of action (karmendriyas) active. HERE’S FOUR, THERE ARE MORE. Four ways to take Vrksasana with props. The use of props make the pose accessible to students who struggle with both stability and mobility issues. They also, however, give opportunity to explore the hip rotation and pelvic opening more fully and for a sustained period of time. HERE’S FOUR, THERE ARE MORE. Just four ways to explore Vrksasana, tree pose. I regularly teach these three “steps” to Vrksasana, seen on the right panel. I have students hold the first one for a period of time or repeat several times so as to be well practiced at balancing on one leg, externally rotating the aerial leg hip and compacting the hips, stabilising the pelvis and lifting the chest. We then begin experimenting with the flexion of the knee and ankle to bring the foot up higher on the standing leg. The foot is “just touching” and not pushing on the inner knee. Finally we take the foot up to complete the pose but if balance or uprightness is lost we redo the steps. HERE’s FOUR, THERE IS MORE. Four ways to take Tadasanana, Mountain Pose, with assistance/enhancement of a prop. The bricks in between the legs help to align the upper with the lower and also right with left. The green strap around the wrist was being push out into - this action met with resistance encourages a fullness and lift of the chest. The calf and achilles stretch speaks for itself. Supta Tadasana, named by Geeta Iyengar so that students wouldn’t confuse it with Savasana, is a way to observe the back body via the feedback of the uniform and stable floor. HERE’s FOUR, THERE ARE MORE. Here are just four (the last two are the same just different angles) ways to take Tadadana, Mountain Pose. While this pose appears pretty simple, the actions required in order to have correct alignment are fundamental to so many poses that come later in practice, including Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) and Sirsasana (headstand). The arm variation help to cultivate an openness and extension within the body. Seen here; Tadasana, Urdhva Hastasana, Urdhva Namaskarasana, Urdhva Baddhanguliyasana. These arm variations can also be taken while sitting. HERE’s FOUR, THERE ARE MORE. Just four ways to take restorative poses with a chair. I really enjoy these four at the end of a back bending practice. Seen here; Pavana Muktasana, Savasana with neck traction, a variation on Prone Savasana and Savasana with elevated legs - excellent for promoting a spreading of the muscles of the lower back, especially if we can stay for a period of time, say ten minutes. Restorative poses and practices are essential for balancing the nervous system. My intention with sharing these poses is that it will facilitate an exploratory, fresh and engaged self practice, a hallmark of the Iyengar Yoga method. If you are new to yoga, or new to these poses, it is always sage to first seek guidance from an experienced teacher. The chair offers the opportunity to remain "lifted" in the pose, which in turn gives us access to the spine and the ability to extend as we revolve. HERE's FOUR, THERE ARE MORE. Just some of the many forward extensions that can be assisted or enhanced with the use of the chair. I have not included any other props, in order to give you a clean picture of the workings of the chair, but you could choose to pad the chair with a mat or blanket where needed. I call the first one a "Standing Dog", because my legs are fairly upright and my heels down. This gives opportunity to expand the calf muscle and Achilles' tendon. You can also take it with your heels up on bricks that are firmly pushed to a wall and the legs at a 45 degree angle. In the Adho Mukha Svanasana (dog pose) and the Parsvottanasana (the pose below it) the chair primarily teaches the drawing back of the top thigh or femur. Guruji also instructed this action in rope traction , like "dog pose in the x-ropes". Further to yesterday's post, I had a student model for this pose because, as you can see, the chair was too short for me to do this pose properly. The leg and arms should be the same height, parallel from the floor. To do that I would have had to bring my leg down and my hips and spine would be hunched to the ceiling. What I ended up with was something between Eka Prasarita Padasana and Virabhadrasana III. It actually felt like a fantastic extension, so worthy trying, but also a reminder that the props need to work for us, not we working for the props. #iyogaproject #yoga #infiniteiyengar #infinitepossibilities #yogaprops #yogapose #iyengaryoga #yogaeverydamnday
