A shepherd moves his flocks inside a shelter during a dust storm bringing rare, heavy rain that caused the whole village to be covered in mud. The local people have a name for such storms that unexpectedly flood the plains: “medicine after death.” The heavy downpour is not enough to quench the thirst of these dry lands, they know. Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPlookup
Tilt your eyes upward for this weekend’s hashtag project: #WHPlookup. 👀 Here are some tips to get you started:
Think vertical. Exaggerate the vertical composition of your photos and videos by putting your hair up in a beehive-styled do, building a five-scoop ice-cream cone or stacking a tall pile of summer reading.
Shoot from a low angle. Capture the height of a redwood tree canopy from the forest floor, or take a street-level Hyperlapse of the sun rising between skyscrapers.
Capture the action. Focus on a basketball player dunking, an airplane flying directly overhead or the mountain summit where you’ll finish your climbing journey.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPlookup hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

“[A] mom must keep constant watch to protect this little baby gorilla at the zoo. There are two young gorillas that would love to use it as a toy,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Jeff Nelson. “The mom spent the entire morning moving from them. Here she catches a brief rest; the baby seems secure in her arms.”

“A portrait of possibility that also raises a questions and important issues. I think anytime we can make a portrait of an animal that moves us and reminds us they are living creatures who feel emotions, have dreams and desires, are very much like us in many ways… this is successful. This one moves me deeply and I hope for the best future for this small creature.” — @natgeo photographer Maggie Steber (@maggiesteber)

Am a big fan of the color of everyday life. After visits to nearby VOIMMA Community Park and Andasibe-Mantadia National Park to check out the lemurs and other wildlife, we took a walk through the nearby village of Andasibe. Pick-up football, local markets, and makeshift foosball tables featured prominently. Draws from the local well, too. This is Madagascar.

Photo by @FransLanting At this time of year wildebeest are pouring into Kenya’s Maasai Mara reserve as part of their annual migration around the larger Serengeti grasslands that stretch across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. It’s an awesome sight to behold and it confirms the vital need to protect Serengeti/Maasai Mara as an integrated ecosystem, but there are many conflicting interests on the horizon that jeopardize the future of this epic phenomenon.
