↠ Here comes Santa Claus! Here comes Santa Claus! 🎶 Happy Samichlaustag! 🎅🏻Today is the day all over Europe when St. Nikolaus appears and leaves you sweets and presents in your boots! 👞In Switzerland this means lots of chocolate, and who isn’t obsessed with Swiss chocolate 🍫😉, walnuts, peanuts, tangerines and Grittibänz, which is best described as a sort of bread man designed to look like Samichlaus! Here you see St. Nikolaus in his more traditional garb based on the origins of the bishop St. Nicolas in his sleigh coming down Bahnhofstrasse. In the Swiss Christmas tradition, Samichlaus/ St. Nikolaus (so many names for so many dialects!) and his assistant Schmutzli come from the woods with a donkey to visit the Swiss children. Children are to prepare a poem and promise to be good for the next year. Schmutzli, however, is always there to punish children that have been naughty. In years past, Schmutzli would literally carry you off to the woods! These days though, Schmutzli is ever so slightly less terrifying. 😅Wondering who brings the presents on Christmas? In Switzerland this is the Christchindli (swiss german)/ Christkind (german) or Christ Child in English. Did Samichlaus bring you anything fun today? 🎁 .

↠ Hello Darlings 🕶️ So sorry for the long delay between posts! Sometimes life just takes over. 🤷🏻‍♀️
.
↠ Today I am bringing you a little piece of #Zurich . Looking over the massive river Limmmat, it’s hard to believe that this river and the magnificent lake have frozen over twice in the last century - perfect for a little ice skating. ⛸️ For now, though, the rink in front of the Opera House on Sechseläutenplatz will have to do! There are no shortage of winter and christmassy things to do here. 🎄It feels like every inch of this city is covered in Christmas Markets! You can find them at the Opera House, the Old Town, Wedmühleplatz, the main station and Bahnhofstrasse. Between all of these you are sure to find some last minute Christmas gifts and some traditional Swiss Christmas treats. Keep your eyes out for the Swiss Christmas cookies (Weihnachtsguezli ) 🍪made with almonds, and everyone’s favorite, glühwein. 🍷

↠ It’s Christmas time in the city🎶 To me a Christmas Market is always the best way to begin the Christmas Season. It’s absolutely lovely in La Grand Place! If you are here, you must see the giant #christmastree 🎄from the Ardennes forest illuminated by the light and music show in the square and wander through some of the over 200 Christmas chalets full of food and crafts near the center and through to Bourse and the Place Saint-Catherine. It’s the perfect place to find some Christmas treats and stocking stuffers and to spend the evening with friends. Personally I’d recommend some hot cocoa made with some of the better Belgian chocolate 🍫from Neuhaus or Leonidas. The Christmas Market will also host several events leading up to Christmas. Light parades will take place every Saturday from 6 to 8 in the city center. with a special musical event on the 19th from 7:00-8:30. There will be several choir 🎼performances in the Place Sainte-Catherine. And finally, there will be a “ball” 💃🏻in the Grand Place on Dec. 22nd where waltzes will be played and all are invited to have a dance in the square! What’s your favorite thing to do to get in the Christmas spirit?✨
.
#traveltips - If you want to make sure to catch the dancing on the 22nd, make sure to catch the first session between 8:00-8:15 or the second session between 8:30-8:45. If dancing isn’t your thing, try the ice skating rink at the Place de la Monnaie! ⛸️

↠ A close up look at the Victory arch at the Parc du Cinquantenaire. The perfect way to spend an afternoon, the #parcducinquantenaire is a cultural haven, housing three museums right next to the heart of the European Quarter. Built to mark 50 years of Belgian independence for the 1880 National Exhibition, there is truly something for everybody! In the center is part of the Royal Museum for Art 🎨and history that has a strong prehistoric collection and your usual forays into European antiquity and the middle ages. If you’re a war ⚔️and history buff, the other side is also a military museum with one of the largest collections in the world of artifacts from the world wars and other Belgian military actions including an entire glass hangar full of planes ✈️and tanks that you can explore - fitting as the entire park sits on an old military training ground. If those aren’t your thing, maybe you prefer cars? Auto world 🏎️ makes the third museum and houses over 350 classic American and European dream cars going back as early as the late 1800s. And if you just prefer a good view and the great outdoors, you can also take a free elevator up the arch for a view of the European Quarter and the rest of the park 🌳, which is the lovely place for a walk or a picnic and frequently hosts festivals - even drive in movies. Hidden in the parc is a statue of a big green dog 🐕. If you rub it’s legs it’s said to bring you good luck. And all of this in one park! Where would you go first?
.
#traveltips - If you want to just stop by for the view, you can go up the arch for FREE. Enter from the lobby of the museum and take the lift. If you want to visit the museum though, it will be 10 euro for adults - same for the Auto World Museum. The Military Museum, however, will only cost you 5 euros. Highly recommend climbing into some old World War planes!

#Retro fun at the #Atomium! Like something out of the Jetsons🚀, this vintage tourist phenomena is from the 1958 Worlds Fair (Expo 58) that was hosted by Belgium, the first after World War II. Meant to be a temporary structure, it was so popular that it remains to this day and hosts exhibitions on the city and the fair. You travel between the spheres via escalator, and at the top is a restaurant with views of the surrounding park and the Brussels skyline. Its design is that of an Iron crystal cell magnified 165 billion times and was meant to represent scientific progress. However, a desire for scientific progress also made it a site of some classic Cold War espionage. Expo 58, which was held at the beginning of the Cold War, in the worst planning ever gave the USA and the USSR adjoining pavilions. The USSR exhibited a model of its Sputnik space satellite🛰️. Rumor has it that the US stole the model of Sputnik, where it had been suspended 3 1/2 stories above the floor, and photographed it as if it was the real thing. It sounds like something from a movie. 🎥Who else likes a good spy story?
.
#traveltips - You can buy tickets in advance to help avoid some of the lines. The Atomium website offers guidance on some of the more off-peak times. You can also buy a combo ticket with the mini-europe exhibition next door, or you can look down on it from the Atomium and get an idea of what it looks like. 😉 It also directly adjourns the Parc d'Osseghem Laeken, which is a great place for a walk on a nice day🌳☀️. In about 20 minutes through the park you can reach the Chinese Pavilion and Japanese tower which house museums of the former royal collection of the “Far East”. Although currently closed, the buildings are also quite beautiful from the outside.

↠ Walking through the grand place I couldn’t help but snap this picture of the statue of Charles de Lorraine, a former governor, over the Brewers Guild building fondly known as L’arbre d’or - or the Golden Tree 🌳 - because of the beautiful carvings on its facade. You may notice that it seems like he is pointing at something. There is story that all of the statues on the tops of the guild houses in the #GrandPlace are connected. Legend says that babies born to unmarried mothers would be left in front of the Town Hall to be taken to the city orphanage. Above the area on the town hall is a knight that points to the statue of Charles de Lorraine. Charles is pointing to the statue of Neptune on the “Golden Boot” house on the opposite side of the the Grand Place. This statue in turn points to a statue of a bishop on the final side of the square who hangs his head in shame. This is supposedly because when the square was being built, a baby was left in front of the town hall and the workers wanted to show who the baby’s father was - not the governor or a sailor but the bishop. As funny as the story is, it can’t be true as the buildings were all designed in different periods. 🤷🏻‍♀️The bishop may rest in peace. In any case, the old Brewery Guild now houses a small museum on the national brewing industry. Tag a friend you would take here for a beer!🍻
.
#traveltip - The Brewery Museum is quite small. While atmospheric with some good information, it’s not a hub of extensive touring. But, as a traditional Belgian beer comes with the price of admission - 5 euro - you can hardly go wrong popping in out of the cold for a quick break!🍺

↠ Rainy day 🌧️ at the Museum in #Brussels! Place Royale, as well as being the site of coronation of the first Belgian king 👑 , is also home to several of the best #rainyday sites for your ultimate #culturetrip in Brussels. Pictured here is the formidable Church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg, situated right around the corner from the Coudenberg Palace, and in the center of the square is a statue 🐎of the first leader of the crusade in 1096, which was built to replace the statue that was melted down during the French Revolution. Across from the Church, however, are not one but two museums. The first is the BELvue museum, dedicated to the history of Brussels and can be good for an overview of the history of the city. #traveltips - you can also get a package ticket to tour some of the palace as well! But the BEST 🌟museum is definitely the René Magritte museum! If you love surrealism, there is no better place to see a full exhibit of Magritte’s work than here in the city where he spent much of his life. 🍏In a way his work is a perfect metaphor for Brussels - a little absurd, a little mismatched, a beauty outside of the ordinary, but full of a certain #joiedevivre. What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy travel day? .

↠ Bienvenue à Bruxelles! 👋🏻La Grand Place, or De Grote Markt in Dutch, is one of the most iconic squares in Europe with architecture from the Gothic and Baroque eras. The ❤️ of the city, you can always find your way in Brussels from La Grand Place (the City Hall Tower can be seen from most areas of the city), and as such, it is often full of tourists but also full of life. Surrounded by restaurants 🥘 and cafes ☕️ (and the fanciest entrance to a Starbucks you’ve ever seen), you can find any Belgian delicacy you could want, from mussels to waffles to the famous #Kriek cherry beer 🍺 . Definitely a great place to go out! It’s worth seeing in the daytime ☀️and the nighttime 🌙 and both the winter ❄️ and the summer 🌳, too. Every summer it is home to the flower carpet 🌸🌼🌺where flowers laid in intricate designs cover the entire square (worth googling!). In the winter, a Christmas Market 🌲is held here and spreads for blocks in every direction with all of the buildings brightly lit in gorgeous colors. As you can see, it is quite beautiful lit up at night already! ✨Which would you rather see: the flower carpet or the Christmas market? 🤔

↠ Wandering down the ancient streets of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. Bishop’s Bridge, seen here, is one of the hallmarks of the Gothic Quarter. Despite its #medieval and #roman surroundings, Bishop’s Bridge was actually built in 1928 as a part of a proposal to construct a series of new gothic buildings in the area. The proposal was turned down, but the architect, upset by the decision, placed a skull 💀 and dagger 🗡️inside. Legend says that if you see the skull and dagger that you will be cursed! 😮But never fear! If you keep wandering around the gothic quarter, you will come upon La Casa de l’Ardiaca (House of the Archdeacon) which has a delightful little stone mailbox carved with birds 🦅and a turtle🐢, added to the medieval building in the 1800s. Legend says that if you touch the turtle, you will be saved from the curse brought on by the skull and dagger!😅
.
#traveltips - Not only the roman and medieval center of the city, the #GothicQuarter is also a wonderful place to discover important sites of the city’s past - check out the Plaça de Sant Felip Neri for remnants of the Spanish Civil War - and also to experience some local culture. You can find some mysterious street art (ps. look for the famous hidden spider🕷️), or enjoy #localartists play music in Sant lu’s square! 🎼And of course, don’t forget to peek into the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia or the Church of Santa Maria del Pi for something a bit more traditional (but no less lovely) than the Sagrada Familia. What’s your favorite thing to find when you explore a new city? .

↠ A view inside my favorite basilica of all time: La Sagrada Familia. By far the most joyful basilica I have ever seen, La Sagrada Familia is inspired by nature, with the pillars of the church designed to resemble tree trunks🌳, which are held up by carvings of turtles🐢, with the some of the columns based on the orbit of the stars ✨. The light airy interior is only complimented by the fiery colors of the stained glass so perfectly designed that when you walk through you are literally bathed in in a rainbow of light🌈. Believing that no man-made work should stand higher than the natural work of God, Gaudí designed the basilica’s 12 towers to stand just 1 meter shorter than Barcelona’s highest hill #Montjuic . Acting like a natural beacon, the stained glass is positioned to reflect the sun and moonlight out to sea to allow sailors to find their way home. Every aspect of the structure has been thought through in such an artistic way, you can see why it is the most visited monument in Spain. What’s the most beautiful building you’ve seen?❤️
.
.
#traveltips - As the basilica is still under construction, taking even longer than the Great Pyramids of Egypt, its primary funding comes from tourism. You can support the continued construction of the basilica, due to be finished in 2026, by taking a tour! Opening hours October through April are from 9AM to 6PM. The views from the towers are spectacular, but if you are claustrophobic or afraid of heights you may want to skip it. A guided tour of this beautiful structure is definitely worth it. Highly recommend! 🕶️ ❤️

↠ Feeling free as a bird at La Sagrada Familia because of all of you wonderful engaged followers! ❤️ In under a month, we’ve already hit over 1000 followers, and I couldn’t be more grateful! Thank you! 😍And because we’re in Spain - Muchas Gracias! Going to keep reaching onwards and upwards!☝🏻
.
↠ This wouldn’t be a #jetsetdarling post without a little something. Snapped this lovely moment at #SagradaFamilia , also designed by Gaudí (are you sensing a theme?) 😉. Under construction since 1882, the Cathedral is still not complete! You can find this charming door, which was actually designed by sculptor Etsuro Sotoo, on the Nativity Facade. One of three, each door represents a Christian virtue - this one is faith. The Nativity facade is the only part of the Cathedral to be finished in Gaudí’s lifetime. As Gaudí once said, “Nothing is invented. It is written in nature,” which is probably why you can find over 36 different species of birds 🦅 and 30 different species of plants 🌱 carved into this facade alone! .
#traveltips - Make sure you buy tickets 🎟️ in advance or be prepared to wait in line - and most importantly - make sure you know which entrance is on the ticket ! Beware - the side you buy your ticket on determines which tower you can go up so think about the views you want in advance. Gotta plan your ‘gram ! 📸

↠ Craving something from La Boquiera today! 🍇🍊🍋There is evidence that the #laboquiera market has existed since 1217 - making it 800 years old 😮! It was moved here after its location next to a local convent was burnt down during a peasant uprising in the 1800s. 🗡️Now it caters to every taste you can imagine as one of the most lively markets in all of Spain where locals and restauranteurs and tourists alike come to get their fresh fish🐟, meat 🍖 and produce 🍉. You can even try edible insects 🐜 . Ummm I think I’ll stick with some fresh coconut! What’s your favorite thing to get at the market?
.
.
↠ The market is actually a prime opportunity to try local #catalan specialties and take a seat during your long walk down #lasramblas. #Protip - try any of the hundreds of specialty hams and olive oils that #spain is known for and take a seat towards the back for some of the freshest tapas you will find. Beware though, the market is not open on Sundays. Otherwise it opens from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM Mondays through Saturdays. Get there early to beat the crowds! 😉
