Renowned NW Coast Artist Roy Vickers wears his chieftain regalia. Roy has been carving a replica of a famous totem pole stolen from his community’s lands in the 19th century. The totem, which has a distinctive 11-foot-long beak, depicts not a raven but a mythical bird known as a hok hok, a fearsome creature that crushes human skulls. Lately Roy has taken to calling it the Hosumdas Totem—hosumdas being a term used to denote the head chieftain of B.C.’s Oweekeno people. A young polar bear stares wistfully at the spoils of Iñupiaq subsistence whalers. The hunt every spring provides a reliable source of food for the polar bears coming out of winter, and the Iñupiat are happy to allow the bears to eat if they maintain a respectful distance from people. #polarbear #arctic #wildlife

A set of caribou antlers demarcates the corner of a bushplane airstrip in the Arctic Refuge. The scarcity of manmade objects here is a testament to the unchanged nature of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge even in the modern era.

This is a series called #ArcticRefuge, about the continuing battle over oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In 2017, the Trump Administration opened the refuge to oil interests through the Tax Bill. Despite this setback, the indigenous Gwich'in who have lived here for millennia continue their 30 year struggle to protect the caribou calving grounds, and, by extension, their way of life in the Arctic. Thawing sea ice has formed meltwater pools off of Kaktovik, Alaska, in July. Cracks in the thick ice below are also visible.

A packraft expeditioner pulls off the Hulahula River at a bend to setup camp. Though the landscape is open, distances are easily underestimated in this enormous region.
