That special Friday feeling. Lately I’ve been a bit anxious. Haha lately. I’ve got a bunch of life events converging at the moment and Mercury is in retrograde or something but I haven’t been sleeping well either. Bad dreams and memories. Times like these I turn to the Ocean for refuge and inspiration. When I’m in the ocean, I surrender to being there in that moment, whether it’s looking at a fish or just listening to the sound of my own breathing. I find it’s the easiest place to release and become mindful in just a moment of surrender and survival. So even though I am mentally and spiritually worn down, and physically I feel like I may have run myself a bit ragged I find myself looking forward to therapy time with the ocean this weekend. A little bit of quiet, centering and mindful existing. Time spent with fishy friends and like minded individuals. Aloha Friday everyone 🤙🏼

Wake up every morning with courage, expressing yourself in the myriad of wonderful ways that only you are capable of. Look within yourself for that unique little sparkle that makes you you. Find what makes you tick and seize your dreams. Look for what makes you want to get up in the morning and seize life by the collar. Stop chasing other people’s @Instagram feeds for your idea of what happiness may be. That’s for them. Find you.

I haven’t been posting much lately. I’ve been enjoying learning a new hobby (watercoloring) and getting back into old ones (spearing), and in between all this always planning and coming up with new ideas with old friends and executing them. My conclusion? The ocean is too generous. At the end of a long few days of diving we sat riding out the current between dives for a while. @markshark808 spotted a dark mass in the water moving towards us and hopped in. The result? Manta Birostris - A pelagic manta! At around eight feet wide, this was just a juvenile female but she was incredibly curious and friendly, reminding me of the playful giants of the Revillagigedos. She did spirals and loops around Mark and I got the chance to hop in too. When I dove down, she rose up to meet me showing me her belly. When I stretched my arms out she would curl and unfurl her cephalic fins. It’s moments like these we spend our lives waiting for. Spectacular interspecies communication and bonds. Empathy and connection. We reported the encounter to @mantapacific. Soon, she’ll be named and put in a catalogue so that hopefully future sightings can track her development as she grows into one of the most intelligent ocean giants out there. 💙

It’s Thursday, which is really just another day but today at yoga we were thinking about gratitude. Well, I think about gratitude and how I need more of it every day as well as patience (please give me all the patience😂) but anyway today she asked what specific body part we were grateful for. For me that’s incredibly easy. My eyes! To be more specific the nifty things implanted in my eyes. I’m not sure how many know or even care for that matter but this is my platform so if you don’t care bugger off and stop reading (but first give us a double tap), until about two years ago I had terrible vision. I’m talkin’ coke bottle glasses or contact lenses 24/7. Who remembers Milton from Office Space? I began wearing some method of optical correction beginning in kindergarten when they first realized I couldn’t see a board. Ever since my vision progressively worsened as I grew older (but never up), I passed legally blind and the range of corrective lenses somewhere way back when in high school and always just went through life washed out. At one point I went to a bunch of expensive doctors who all told me the same thing, not a candidate for lasik. Then about two years ago I read about a process where they put the lens inside your eye etc etc. long story slightly shorter, I got it and finally had my vision corrected to a ridiculous 20/15 in one eye and 20/20 in the other. Guys, do you know how beautiful the world is? How incredibly breathtaking every last detail of nature is, from the giant watercolor skies to the tiny little details of fibers, to be able to see texture, to actually see things happen, the tiniest movements. The added side to having the lenses inside my eyes is also freedom of course. Up until maybe six months ago I have never opened my eyes in the shower or pool or ocean since I was five. To never have to worry about losing a lens, well... that’s life changing too. Today, and every day since, I am grateful for the technology that put these little tiny lenses inside my eye. I am grateful for the gift of vision and the chance to live life a little freer. What are you grateful for? #teamcanon #neverstopexploring #diving#gratitude #manta #yoga #hawaii#dive

It’s not the words on social media we promise or our public proclamations, but our actions behind closed doors and when we are alone that have weight as well. To forgo a plastic convenience when you’re out running errands and forget your reusable cup. To make choices based on not yourself but everyone in genuine and authentic love. To continue to act in a conscious and mindful manner when we are not held accountable is one of the most beautiful and telling character traits of them all. •

This past year has been one of a lot of growth and change for me. I’ve learned to reach out towards new friendships and leave the unhealthy ones behind. I’ve learned that standing on my own two feet and accomplishing something on my own doesn’t necessarily mean I’m alone. I’ve learned to fall in love with myself but realize that I need to change so many of my everyday habits. What would it be like if we all acted and spoke consciously? If we were fully present for every interaction, every promise? I suppose diving has brought me to a greater appreciation, it’s a world where distractions and incessant internal chatter fades to the beautiful noise of nature. Diving is like packing up to leave the noisy city of the mind behind and slipping off to the country side for the weekend. Daily distractions fade away, conscious appreciation sets in and everything moves around in its own meaningful purpose. Predators and prey intermingle in balanced harmony. I’ve challenged myself to bring more of this into dry life. To seek meaningful purpose beyond a traditionally accepted societal role, to seek change to a system that has fallen out of balanced harmony. •

I’m gonna let you in on a little something. It’s not about the likes you get on Instagram, or the fame or exposure. It’s not about the 30 seconds of glory or how famous and popular you are. It’s about finding your tribe and never giving up on the world. Find the ones who will chase waves through the storms with you. Find the drive around the island and suit up for stormy weather in the ocean friends and make the weirdest faces for photos friends. Find the friends who can and will tell you anything, from tough love to how jalapeños feel the same going in as they do coming out. Find the friends who send you thoughtful notes, dog memes and poke to see if you’re still alive when you’ve been radio silent too long. Find your water tribe that will stand behind you when you want to make a difference and support you when you’re all trying to make positive changes. Find the ones who aren’t ready to give up on the chance of changing the world and start with themselves and when you find them, love them. On this Aloha Friday I’m super grateful for my friends and my water tribe, my storm chasing wild sea stars and friendships that go beyond the ocean. 💙
