Photographed on assignment by @ciriljazbec for the current issue of National Geographic Magazine.
The desire to teach their children about computers drew these Samburu women to a classroom in a settlement north of Nairobi. They are learning about tablets—designed to withstand tough use—that connect to the Internet through a satellite and come preloaded with educational programs.
Technology now has arrived in isolated regions of Africa primarily in the form of relatively inexpensive cell phones.

“A male orangutan peers from behind a tree while crossing a river in Borneo, Indonesia,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan. “Rampant palm oil cultivation threatens this critically endangered ape, forcing the normally arboreal species to resort to unusual behavior — such as wading through crocodile-infested rivers — in order to survive.”

After over 11,000 photo submissions from around the world, @natgeo’s panel of judges has named Jayprakash Joghee Bojan as the 2017 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. The judges were impressed by how this poignant image spoke to the impact deforestation is having on the habitat of this critical endangered species. Check out our Instagram Story to read @natgeo’s interview with Bojan. Congratulations @jayaprakash_bojan!

While Ellie Costello (@makeupisart_x) paints magical scenes on her eyelids, it feels like she plants them. “I never ever plan a look and then go and get the flowers,” explains 20-year-old Ellie, who lives in London. “I always get some flowers first, then envision the look around the flowers. I find that creating as you go along always allows your creativity and imagination to run a lot more freely — I like just letting the magic happen.” Ellie is part of the beauty community on Instagram who made the eyelid their canvas of choice in 2017. “It is great when you can collaborate with other artists and discover new amazing talent to follow. There is always so much creativity on Instagram, it is very inspiring.”
