We need to acknowledge Ms. Bridget "Biddy" Mason on what would have been her 200th birthday.
.
Mason was born a slave in Georgia and was brought to California in 1851. Since California was admitted to the Union as a free state, Mason was able to legally obtain her freedom despite all attempts to thwart her.
.
In the ensuing years, Biddy worked as a midwife and nurse, becoming one of the first African Americans to own land in Los Angeles. She also amassed a small fortune and was reportedly a friend of politician and governor, Pio Pico. In 1872, she helped to found the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles.
