❌ So here’s the thing… if you only read the infographic above (and avoid the content in this caption), you will only derive a small snippet of the value from this post.

😍 The truth is this: You CAN Eat ANY Food You Want AND Still LOSE FAT!
⠀⠀
📈 You can also eat any food you want and gain body fat (though that’s a very unlikely goal haha).
⠀⠀
👉🏼 And the reason that BOTH of the above statements are true is because of a concept called ENERGY BALANCE, and The Law of Thermodynamics:

(Calories consumed) - (Calories expended) = Weight gained/lost
⠀⠀
⚡️ This is essentially “Calories in” vs. “Calories out”, where you need to be having less calories “in” than calories “out” in order to lose weight.
⠀⠀
😌 And while it makes a lot of sense to eat mostly healthy foods like berries, spinach, chicken breast, melon, asparagus and bananas… you CAN eat some Oreos and a slice of pizza every now and again so long as you are not over consuming calories.
⠀⠀
😎 And the reason that all of the above foods are “the best” is because they allow you enough micronutrients, on top of enjoying your diet through flexibility.
⠀⠀
💥 But also know this… EVERY food in moderation can also be “the best” (unless you are allergic, or something, duh) so don’t be a headline reader - always look for the depth hidden in the caption, and eat according to your preferences and goals!

🍹 If you’re drinking alcohol this weekend and don’t want to ruin your fitness progress.... read on!

Liquid calories add up quick! Especially when they come from alcohol.
⠀⠀
That’s why it makes sense to choose low-calorie options when you’re out for a drink, and not opting for high-calorie, high-sugar options like margaritas or fruity mixed drinks!
⠀⠀
Instead, go with something from the list above and keep your calories in check!
⠀⠀
Also, you can swap your soda for a zero calorie alternative (coca cola to Coke Zero) to save calories on your mixed drinks too!

Lastly, it’s often not the calories directly from alcohol that ruin our progress, but rather all the food we blindly eat once we are drunk — so if you can, plan ahead and instead of an entire pizza, maybe just one slice! Okay? 🍕

I remember reaching out to @legionath in December of last year for the first time. I asked them to collaborate as part of my Christmas Fitness and Gratitude Challenge....

Let’s get real for a second... if you are spending hours and hours per day on social media, then you have time to prepare meals that allow you better adhere to your nutrition plan and make progress on your goals.

And if you have time to play @fortnite then you have time to track your macros.
⠀⠀
And if you have time to binge watch TV shows on @netflix then you have time to workout.
⠀⠀
Pretty straight forward, huh.
⠀⠀
But priorities matter!
⠀⠀
Where you invest your time, energy and attention matters.
⠀⠀ So before you scroll through the gram, or play a game of Fortnite, or watch 3 episodes of your favorite TV show, simply ask yourself if that’s what you want most right now. And if it is — go for it!

But if you truly want something else, like to achieve a fitness goal or something of the sorts, don’t allow yourself to make the excuse of time, because ultimately you are in control.

🍕 How to TRACK Macros
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…
⠀⠀
Tracking your macros is one of the best investments you can make in yourself and in your short term AND long term fitness progress.
⠀⠀
Doing so enables you to develop a stronger relationship with food, so that you can better intuitively make good food choices when in a fat loss deficit, at maintenance or when bulking.
⠀⠀
This is because tracking your macros teaches you about the nutrient values of food. It helps you guesstimate how many calories are in certain meals. And it ultimately builds your confidence in making good choices day-to-day.
⠀⠀
So, please track your macros (at least for a few months) because you’ll learn A LOT along the way!
⠀⠀
But… how DO you actually track your macros?
⠀⠀
Good question.
⠀⠀
There are a few ways:
⠀⠀
(1) A food scale is the most accurate way to track macros. You do this by weighing your foods and inputting them into an app of your choice (I like @nibblehealth for iPhone or @fitgenieapp).
⠀⠀
(2) You can use Google or a search engine to look up particular foods as well.
⠀⠀
(3) You can read nutrition labels (very accurate) and take down the macros from there and input them into your app or food log.
⠀⠀
(4) You can use measuring cups (also pretty accurate) to determine quantities of the food you eat.
⠀⠀
So really, it comes down to this… inputting the thing you are eating into some sort of app or log in the most accurate manner you have available to you, whether it’s by search, or via a label or even weighing it out.

It might sound simple, and that’s because it is! However, there is a learning curve so stick with it, and do your best!

🍖🥦🥜 MACROS 101: What are macronutrients?

For starters, macronutrients are substances that contain calories (protein, carbs and fats).
⠀⠀
Our bodies require them in relatively large (macro) amounts to function properly day to day.
⠀⠀
It’s also important to note that macros are measured in grams, and each macronutrient contains a certain number of calories.
⠀⠀
1 gram of protein contains 4 calories
⠀⠀
1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories
⠀⠀
1 gram of dietary fat contains 9 calories (making it the most energy dense macronutrient)
⠀⠀
It’s also sort of relevant to note that alcohol could stand in as a 4th macronutrient, containing 7 calories per gram (though you probably should not consume in in relatively large amounts!)

🍷 Do these drinks really burn fat? Let’s find out!
⠀⠀
Here’s the thing... the way your body burns fat 🔥 is through expending more energy than you consume.
⠀⠀
This phenomenon is referred to as the Law of Thermodynamics, or a component of energy balance.
⠀⠀
Energy balance is essentially Calories in vs. Calories out, and when you consume fewer calories than you expend through activity/exercise, you create what is known as a negative energy balance, or a calorie deficit, which results in fat burning, or fat loss.
⠀⠀
A positive energy balance would create a calorie surplus, and would result in weight gain.
⠀⠀
So let’s get back to the original question… do these drinks actually “burn” fat?
⠀⠀
The answer is no. At least not directly. But indirectly, they might help.
⠀⠀
Here’s how:
⠀⠀
Because fat burning occurs when you are in a calorie deficit (consuming fewer calories than you expend), from a dieting perspective it makes sense to select drinks that allow you to adhere to a calorie deficit the best.
⠀⠀
This means drinks that are zero or low-calorie make the most sense, or drinks (like protein shakes) that allow you to retain more muscle when dieting.
⠀⠀
Does that make sense?
⠀⠀
So while these drinks do not directly burn fat off your love handles, if they help you adhere to the calorie deficit required to lose fat, they will indirectly lead to fat burning.

🏋🏻‍♂️ Why Everyone Should Lift Weights
⠀⠀
I’ll be blunt. You should be lifting weights. And so should your friends.
⠀⠀
And not just because you’ll get lean, strong and sexy AF if you do (which you will).
⠀⠀
Rather, you should be lifting weights because it will in fact make your entire life better.
⠀⠀
Here’s how:
⠀⠀
(1) Lifting weights builds self-esteem. And self-esteem matters a whole lot.
⠀⠀
When you lift weights you gain self-awareness. You learn what you’re capable of today, and incapable of today. And over time (through repetition, hard work and consistency), you also learn that you’re capable of overcoming the things you were once incapable of, and that’s the type of confidence that applies to anything you do.
⠀⠀
(2) Lifting weights makes you a better human. And the world needs more and more good humans.
⠀⠀
When you lift weights you become more capable — not just physically, but mentally. You increase your human potential do achieve things, complete tasks and contribute.
⠀⠀
And because we’ve already agreed that lifting weights improves self-esteem, you’ll likely find yourself looking at the world form a different perspective — one of contribution, where you engage in service to others.
⠀⠀
For example, you can help an old lady cross the street, or open a heavy door for her. You can carry the groceries inside for your parents, or help move your grandparents belongings into their nursing home. You can give your kids (or future kids) piggy back rides, and lift them up to the sky. You can beat up your sisters asshole boyfriend. Or plant flowers in your beautiful girlfriends garden.

Understand?

Lifting weights means you become more capable of contributing to the world. And that matters deeply.
⠀⠀
So no matter where you’re at, what goals you have or how old you are... just start.
