Photo by @nicholesobecki | A health worker carries Kakule Kavendivwa, 14, to a waiting ambulance in Beni, Democratic Republic of Congo. The day before Kakule's sisters had taken him to a nearby health center, but fled when the team encouraged them to go to an Ebola treatment center. The health center alerted the World Health Organization who found the family. After several hours of talking with community outreach workers, they allowed an ambulance to take him for treatment. “People need to have a chance to talk,” Zoe Kyavaghendi, a risk communication officer told me as we waited for Kakule's sisters to consider their options. “You can’t force them right away, you need to give them a chance to express their fears, and then to explain afterwards.” To learn more about the ongoing Ebola outbreak — already the second largest in history, and the first in an active war zone — take a look at our story “Life amid an Ebola outbreak: Combating mistrust—and saving lives.” Link in bio @nicholesobecki #ebola #drc #health #epidemic

Group Meal | Photograph by Vadim Balakin (@vadimbalakin)

"Bubble net feeding is a unique technique employed by humpback whales, in which a group of whales swim in a shrinking circle blowing bubbles below a school of fish," says #YourShotPhotographer Vadim Balakin, who got this aerial shot off the coast of Antarctica. "This shrinking column of bubbles surrounds the school of fish forcing them upward."

We hit the hills outside of Kathmandu for a half-day hike to the town Panauti. .

Although this route through villages and terraced fields has been used by locals for ages, it has only recently been developed for travelers by @gadventures and their local partner @communityhomestaynetwork. The goal: to be more inclusive of those communities which previously hadn’t benefited from tourism in the region. .

The final destination of this 10km day hike: Panauti, a charming little town known for its temples and as one of the Kathmandu Valley @UNESCO sites. Until a few years ago, visitors day tripped to Panauti without delivering much revenue or benefit to the local community. .

A G Adventures tour leader (CEO) from Panauti saw potential in his hometown and a way for his community to benefit in a sustainable way from tourism. That is how the @planeterracares Panauti Homestay project was born. Its focus: the training and economic empowerment of local women. Today, there are 20 families in Panauti welcoming G Adventures travelers who spend anywhere from an overnight up to four days with them - living, cooking and learning together.
We had an opportunity to join Ssarmila in her home and cook a traditional Nepali meal together. As she explained, it’s not only the women and families directly involved in the homestay program who benefit from additional income. Local farmers and businesses also benefit since food and other supplies are sourced locally. .

These days, travelers can now remember the warmth, interaction and delicious food which all form the experience at the Panauti homestay — more than the temples for which the town had been famous. .

Photo by @sofia_jaramillo5 | Wax Palm trees grow in the Cocora Valley near Salento, Colombia. The enormous trees grow up to 200 feet tall and thrive in high-altitude places. When I first explored this area, I was astonished by the beauty of these trees. They reminded me of a book from my childhood. Can you guess which one?

Spent a few days chasing icebergs around the tiny town of Twillingate. Did you know it takes 3 years for the icebergs to float over from Greenland and that the ice that makes up an iceberg is over 15,000 years old? How cool is that?!?! 💎🌊
