The Permaculture Design Certificate at @kulkulfarm has begun! Last night we welcomed students from all the corners of the earth, and today the design class begins... classroom mornings, hands-on afternoons, incredible hosts, beautiful farm-grown food and once the day is done, bamboo yurts to sleep and recharge... it's going to be a pretty incredible two weeks, methinks.
.
During this time we'll take you on some mini-tours of this farm and its surrounds on our IG stories - they'll all be catalogued in our 'Bali' highlights if you miss a piece. Rocket stove cooking, bamboo and natural architecture, nutrient cycling, soil building, mushroom cultivation, and the Milkwood permaculture design process, woven throughout it all. So much to show, to learn and to share! Enjoy x

Salt-making on the beach, where sea meets sky... with the salt makers of Tejakula.
.
Seawater is collected, reduced in raised ponds, then transferred to hollowed-out coconut trunks above the high-tide mark... to complete the evaporation process. The salt is then scraped out, gathered in woven baskets, and taken to market.
.
A study in simplicity. Local materials, sunshine and re-purposed metal makes up the entire production process. The result is the Bali sea, distilled and able to be carried in a pocket.
.
We’ll take our precious haul of salt from here to demonstrate ferments during the Permaculture Design Certificate we’re teaching at @kulkulfarm - it starts tomorrow.
.
Memories and long-established methods. The sea made solid. And now it comes with us, up into the mountains, on the next leg of our journey... #permaculturebali .
The salt making process is in our stories today ☺️

Travelling with kids, part 2: everything is awesome, every staircase is to be sprinted, every flower is to be examined, every pebble is to be inspected.
.

I’m a bit astounded by how accepting he is of each new farm, city and place - however different it may be from home. He absorbs whatever he can, and simply sets aside whatever is too much to take in. Lessons for life, in the form of a fizzing, sprinting, constantly asking, forever hungry and always exploring 9yo... ❤️ .
.
Also part 2 of our @bumilangit.official farm tour up on stories today (and afterwards in our ‘farm tour’ highlights)! Rice fields, biogas, ducks and coconut sourdough, Java-style... #permaculturejava .

Integrated duck and fish systems, biogas production, organic veggies, and an on-farm cafe (warung) serving raw milk kefir, homemade sourdough and the most delicious nasi goreng on the planet.
.
Hello from Bumi Langit - a permaculture farm, ecostay, warung and teaching institute in the hills above Yogyakarta. We’re here visiting Bebe from @benihkitaprojects , an Indonesian seedbank dedicated to seed freedom 🙌🏽. We’re spending our days exploring, chasing ducks out of the spring onions, eating fermented cassava, learning new trees, and generally blissing out in this awesome example of tropical permaculture.
.
There’s part 1 of a mini farm tour on our stories today, and in our farm tour highlights after that. Viva la @bumilangit.official ! ❤️🌱.

New land, new smells, language, water, air, new everything.
.
But always, there are the trees. They show their attributes in their form, their flowers, their place in the ecosystem. I chart and decipher the pioneer species, the legumes, the fruit and nut and fodder trees. And like this I put the world back together, when it’s all so very new. By the time I’ve figured out the main trees and the weeds of a new place, I’m in the swing of it all - even if I can’t quite hold a conversation yet.

What do you do when you travel, to get the hang of things? #adaptation #permaculturebali

On Milkwood.net today we're chatting with none other than JM Fortier - farmer, author of the much-loved book The Market Gardener, and the kind of guy who wants EVERYONE who wants to learn how to grow great veggies for their community. Which is fine by us.
.
To help take growers or would-be growers that one step closer towards this goal of local food systems provisioned by local farmers, JM is hosting a free crop-planning webinar! The details of how to join up, plus a host of other thoughts on farming, hardship, joy and of course surfing, are in the interview. You can read it by clicking on the link in our profile today. Enjoy! .

Forests are such amazingly hopeful places. After a dryer-than-dry summer, with an unprecedented lack of rain, the winter mosses have all suddenly returned, with the smallest promise of moisture. And now the soft green is everywhere, from high up in the branches to down along the creeks, as if summer had never been.
.

I walk this forest path multiple times a week - sometimes I see the forest around me, and sometimes I don't, too deep in my own thoughts. The seasons change constantly, high above in the canopy and down below my boots, and the cycles spin around. Right now the last of the poplar and willow leaves are falling yellow along the creeks, and the white forms of eucalyptus are reclaiming the gully. The soft winter weeds that we gather for greens in our soup are starting to edge the paths, and the mosses are all around. A cold, misty and beautiful time of year in this valley.
.
Tomorrow, we're off on a big family adventure to the jungles of Indonesia - to learn new things, teach permaculture design, and to sit quietly in completely different forests to this one, soaking it all up. I can't quite belive it. Until then - moss, poplar, eucalypt, creek. I keep walking. #springcreekcommunityforest .

Egg-mobile magic at @mountgnomonfarm ... modelled on the classic design developed by Joel Salatin in Virginia, some 25+ years ago now...
.

It's gorgeous, it's mobile, it houses laying hens happily, and is a classic design of the small farm scene. So good to see one in Tasmania, a world away from @polyfacefarm in the Shenandoah Valley... ❤️ 🐓 .

Gertie (left) and Hannah, doing their early morning thing in the backyard of @goodlife_permaculture , an urban permaculture homestead in Hobart.
.

The good people are everywhere you go - quietly milking, growing food, designing community futures, changing the world and getting together at the #deepwinteragrarians gathering that we’re now returning home from.
.

I DO know that there’s heaps of great people out there, supporting and nurturing their communities from the ground up, but jeepers it’s nice to see a bunch of them all in the one place for a weekend. Thanks all ❤️ #community #smallfarmersfeedtheworld #permaculture #deepwinteragrariangathering

A huge day of talking farms and people and Things That Matter at the annual Deep Winter Agrarian Gathering here in Cygnet.
.
I was so excited and happy to see old friends that the only picture I remembered to take was of the town hall’s doorstop (which was gorgeous, and gives you a small indication of how cool the Tassie small-farm network is, in a crabapple and artichoke kinda way).
.
So many inspiring small farmers organising, doing and sharing, topped by an amazingly generous dinner put on by Sadie, Matt and crew at @fat_pig_farm last night. Full hearts and bellies both. And more to come today. #deepwinteragrarians #community #loclafoodsystems
