Like water, our existence is always changing, moving, ebbing and flowing. We are never the same. Like fluids, we cannot fit into any solid mould. We can go with the flow, change easily, not be confined to anything. We are part of the free flow of experience.

We never step into the same river twice. .
.
Vinyasa Flow has and continues to be my primary practice in yoga. In part, I love this practice because it honours the qualities of fluidity and adaptability that are inherent parts of our experience. Yet uncertainty and constant change can so easily trip us up. We often resist life’s changes, especially when they are grim. We like certainty. We like control. Vinyasa allows me the space to explore and express my relationship to the uncertain and constantly shifting sands of my moment-to-moment experience. .

When my practice of vinyasa is accompanied by mindfulness, I begin to make space to notice how I am meeting my experience. Yoga opens us up. Mindfulness grants me the tools to meet the watershed of all my thoughts, feelings and emotions with greater compassion and care. Rather than react by pushing things away or demanding they be different, mindfulness teaches me to learn to stay with what’s arising and respond with a degree of softening, listening and respect. I don’t have to like everything that arises. But I can respect it, listen to it, and care for it. .

We can’t ever stop the ego, but we can stop the momentum behind it. First step for me? Learn to be adaptable and fluid, like water, and flow the way the river flows. .

Clearing what no longer serves me. Filling with what grants me greater clarity and ease. Welcoming in the new year and its infinite possibilities - be it confusion or delight, silliness or deep meaning, resistance or open doors.
.
I don’t usually set New Years goals or resolutions, but today this intention stood out: To draw awareness in and continually reach out to my present-moment mind-states. When my mind-state is spacious and free, my practice is to let that space and freedom expand. When my mind-state feels tangled, tight or bruised, my practice is to notice this and be gentle with it. The noticing serves as a way to offset further entanglement and contraction. Awareness itself is what can be a relief. It opens us to a moment where we can let go of compulsions or unnecessary narratives. It invites us to become present to something neutral and ordinary, like our breath, bodily sensations or sounds. Yet awareness also offers this: The opportunity to see that in anything ordinary, the extraordinary is possible. The very fact that I am conscious, breathing and alive is a profound mystery. Awareness becomes space for curious wonder and awe. .
.
Here’s to the extraordinary ordinariness of this new year’s beginning. May it be a year filled with appreciation and meaning. And may we continually delight in the ongoing adventures of being human ❤️

A cheeky smile caught on camera the other day - but thank goodness this is my general mood near the end of one very hard year. The most difficult things? The loss of family and one of my closest friends. While these losses have crushed me at times, they have also helped me recognize the preciousness of embracing each moment we are alive. I thank my practices -especially #mindfulness and the insights from my teachers - for this gift. Each time I felt like my heart wanted to shatter into a thousand pieces, the Buddha’s wise teachings have offered guidance for learning how to attend to my heartache and care for it, like I’d care for a close friend’s sadness and grief. It’s never easy, but I am hopeful that accepting strong emotions is also helping me open to a few more moments of laughter, joy and love. .
.
In Feb, I’ll be teaching a Foundations of Mindfulness course at @triyogauk. I’ll do my best to share what my teachers and personal experiences with mindfulness have been over the years. I’ll also offer some of its other benefits as well as strategies for establishing a daily practice. And in the Buddha’s honour I will do my best to share it all with kindness and compassion 🙏🙏🙏

Qigong wood spiral mudras for movement and growth + a surprising nomination for Amazon’s choice 🙏|| .

When asked to do a few qigong dvds/videos earlier this year, I was hesitant but thought, well – the worst case is I will cringe, and it will just sit there for sale and no one will buy it. The best case may be that the video is ok, and can support people's health.
.
I'm cautiously optimistic that it's the later that may be true, and that these videos may be helping people heal.
.
Story 1: The other day my niece told me that her boyfriend's mother, bought my DVD. I would have given her a copy had I known she was interested! Since using the video, she said that some of the symptoms from a long-term health problem have started to improved. She is also sleeping better. Hearing this made my day. .
.
Story 2: A person kindly wrote and shared that qigong has been assisting him from recovering post-concussion; he said, 'Qigong is the first movement I can do reliably, and I see it helping with the healing'. . .

Story 3: Today, the producers at @newshootpictures shared that the video has just been selected as an Amazon's Choice product on the UK site. This is given when customers vote and review.

I am feeling deeply grateful. I'd also like to extend a special thanks to all those who have kindly supported this work. I hope these videos can help more people experience the benefits of qigong, and make the practices more familiar and accessible over time. .

Yesterday I had the great honour of meeting this elder feline fluffiness, Scruffy! She is 14. 🙏 And so sweet! In fact she was perfect inspiration for reading a new little book that @dan_peppiatt_yoga_like_water gave me called ‘’How to Live Like Your Cat’ by Stephan Garnier. He knows I love my cat #qigong forms ! 😻😼

There is a Chinese expression, ‘When things reach their extreme, they must move in the opposite direction.” - (Wuji bifan) 物极必反. As the winter solstice approaches, rather than seeing it as the darkest day, consider seeing this day as the Chinese like to think of it: the beginning of the ascent of yang. And... while yin’s main property is darkness, within yin there is always yang. ☯️
