Harvest Week: In pagan cultures and religious rites, ivy symbolized growth, determination and death, as it had the strength to kill larger plants and in Roman times, it was a symbol of the god of wine #Bacchus. This fall 1938 Elsa Schiaparelli necklace, worn by the stylish #MillicentRogers, is a one-of-a-kind work crafted with a true sense of realism, particularly in the sinuous twining of the ivy branches, like a growing vine.

Biggy picked me to be his human when I visited a shelter in the summer of 2000. He had a very decorated career in mousing and occasionally assisted when I needed a model. He is enjoying retirement and focusing on his health. ~ Eileen Costa, MFIT’s photographer

We are saddened to learn of the passing of the great fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa.
"In the fashion world, he was a great, a major couturier. Everything was at the top with him: couture, art, the standards he aimed at, his dedication to his work, his mastering of techniques, and all the women he dressed. He was an artisan in the noble sense of the term." ~ François-Henri Pinault

Of Nature Week: “Birds dwell at the heart of human experience,” writes naturalist Mark Cocker. Laden with symbolism, they feature prominently in the art, literature, and folklore of many cultures, past and present. #Birds have come to represent #transformation, freedom, honor, grace, and a myriad of other exalted principles and virtues. #Feathers are the defining features of birds, affording them an alluring sense of mystery and unsurpassed beauty. Their expressive and #kinetic qualities have captured the human imagination for millennia.

Of Nature Week: Plato’s Atlantis, Alexander McQueen’s final and most acclaimed collection from 2010, imagined the devolution of man and a return to the seas where life began. Nature again emerged as McQueen’s principal theme, expressed in groundbreaking, digitally-engineered patterns inspired by terrestrial as well as aquatic life.

Of Nature Week: Mary Katrantzou’s spring 2015 collection referenced plate tectonics and the constant reorganization of land masses. In this ensemble, beaded “plates” mounted on a sheer bodice are surrounded by a sea of fluid silk, suggesting a world in flux. Plate tectonics are powered by gravity, one of the four fundamental forces of physics.

Of Nature Week: Designer Albert Kriemler of Akris cleverly recreated python skin using hundreds of laser-cut, leather scales, each of which was hand-placed and sewn onto this 2016 dress. The result is a technical feat that highlights Akris’s commitment to artistry and craftsmanship. Due to poaching, some python species are now threatened. Kriemler’s design offers an imaginative and luxurious alternative to real snakeskin.

Of Nature Week: Victorian culture fostered an understanding of nature based on intensive investigation, with everything from ocean life to microorganisms under examination. For its spring 2016 collection, this fashion design collective ThreeASFOUR explored fractal patterns rendered as elaborate textile prints, such as the one on this dress. “There is a certain proportion that nature follows. This is sacred geometry.”

Motty (whiter kitty) and Joey Juju (grayer kitty) Berger were left on my lawn when they were a year old. They were very sick when my husband I found them but after a handful of visits to the vet we are happy to say that they are doing well and the greatest addition to our family. ~ Gladys

Bat Week: In Western culture, #bats can sometimes reference demons and devils. Chinese artists have long used the bat as a symbol of #happiness and #joy. Five bats together represent the 'Five Blessings' — health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue, and a peaceful death.

Bat Week: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Design for a fancy-dress costume by Léon Sault for #CharlesFrederickWorth, 1860s. The deep crimson crinoline skirt is decorated with cavorting #demons and #bats in flight, and the overskirt is shaped and patterned to suggest a black lizard skin with gilded scales. An #owl in flight forms the wearer's bodice, and her headdress is a devil with horns and a pitchfork sitting in flames. She wears a veil and matching tulle oversleeves in black, spangled with stars and moons. Image and text via Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Bat Week: Beginning with the rise of the #gothic novel in the eighteenth century, #gothicstyle has been associated with sublime themes of terror and the supernatural, as well as death, time, and transcendence. But as creatures of the night, #bats were associated with the mysterious and the supernatural long before Bram Stoker's novel #Dracula.
