Cyntoia Brown killed a 43-year-old man in self-defense at age 16, when he had solicited her for sex and she felt her life was in danger. Cyntoia was born to an alcoholic mother who drank every day throughout her pregnancy. As we know, youth’s brains are not fully developed at 16. In addition, Cyntoia was born with fetal alcohol disorder, which can result in “poor impulse control and a disconnect between thought and action” which led to her having the brain development and maturity of a 10 or 11 year old at the time of the murder. She entered the foster care system at 8 months old, and eventually became a runaway. All her life, she had been preyed on by men who raped and assaulted her countless times. Her 24-year-old boyfriend/pimp, named “KuttThroat,” violently forced her into prostitution. One night, he forced her to meet up with Allen, the John who Cyntoia ultimately killed in self-defense. Because of her case, children in Tennessee under the age of 18 now cannot be tried for prostitution and they are now viewed as victims of child human trafficking. She has spent the past 14 years in prison, where she has completely turned her life around and earned her associates degree, and additional education, from Lipscomb University. The Tennessee Supreme Court has ruled that Cyntoia must serve 51 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

@governorbillhaslam has the ability to grant clemency. I ask you, Governor Haslam to do the right thing. We MUST begin to care more for those who are survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking than the violent rapists who mercilessly use and abuse women. Cyntoia is a victim, not a criminal. Many rapists are given only probation (Brock Turner,Jacob Anderson, etc.), while Cyntonia is spending her life in prison, as a result of an act of self defense. It’s time to set her free. This case is a prime example of the ways racism, white supremacy, economic injustice, and mysogny have infiltrated our justice system. Our system is NOT broken, it is working the way it was always intended to. #FreeCyntoiaBrown #justiceforcyntoiabrown #cyntoiabrown #clemencyforcyntoia #blacklivesmatter #endsexualviolence #endhumantrafficking

Just finished reading this book for the 5th or 6th time. If you have never read it, I highly recommend it. This book was very formative for me and it transformed my thinking about Jesus and the Gospel. This book explores “what the teachings of Jesus have to say to those who stand at a moment in human history with their backs against the wall... the poor, the disinherited, the dispossessed.”

This semester, I was blessed with the opportunity to take the elective course “Howard Thurman: Spirituality & the Quest for Justice.” We studied the writings of Howard Thurman and discussed many issues at the intersection of race, social justice, and spirituality. I am so happy I was able to learn and share in open dialogue with these diverse, kind, thoughtful, and creative fellow theologians! #beingbrite #britedivinityschool
