Halsman was a refugee who escaped the Nazis and came to America with the assistance of Einstein (another refugee) in 1941. Halsman was a Latvian Jew and the quota was full, so Einstein who already knew Halsman from Europe had his name added to a special list for emergency visas for artists and scientists put together by Eleanor Roosevelt. Halsman came to NYC to be reunited with his family (who all had French passports and were on the last boat out of France before it fell to the Nazis) and was assisted by many kind American families. Having been spared, while millions perished across Europe, he felt the need to prove his worth and had to work hard in order to feed his young family. With in 2 years he had his first cover of LIFE magazine, and went on to contribute a lot to American culture, a nation of immigrants. In 1947 Halsman visited Einstein in Princeton and was proud to show him all he had accomplished. During their photo shoot, Einstein began speaking about how his discoveries led to the science which helped make the Atomic bomb. Philippe writes in his book _Sight and Insight_ "With my entire being I felt how much this infinitely good and compassionate man was suffering from the knowledge that he had helped to put in the hands of politicians a monstrous weapon of devastation and death." Halsman was so taken in this moment that he almost was paralyzed to click the shutter of the camera which resulted in the above photo. The Halsman Archive joins millions of other Americans and opposes the new bans on refugees being put in place. America has always been a beacon of hope for the world and a place where people have been blessed to escape the violence of their homeland and begin again, woven into the diverse fabric of this great nation. Diversity is strength. Unity is power. Compassion is a virtue. Love is the only path. #nobannowall #nobodyisillegal #einstein #halsman #resist
